The University of Montana invites applicants for the next Women’s Basketball Head Coach to lead the historically successful Montana Lady Griz program. The successful candidate for this coaching position will possess intercollegiate athletics experience with proven ability to recruit and lead a successful women’s basketball program to the Big Sky Conference tournament. The successful candidate should also be able to demonstrate expertise in all aspects of coaching student-athletes at the collegiate level with a commitment to the highest ideals of sportsmanship and academics as well as developing and maintaining a positive student-athlete experience.

Responsibilities
  • Promote an atmosphere for compliance within the program supervised by the coach and to monitor the activities regarding compliance of all assistant coaches and other administrators involved with the program who report directly or indirectly to the coach (NCAA Bylaw 11.1.2.1).
  • The primary responsibilities of the head coach are to instruct, guide and teach college women’s basketball student-athletes in the various skills, processes, philosophies and plans associated with the sport.
  • Promote the team, program, and University in a professional manner at all times, while promoting positive and productive working relationships with other staff members.
  • Plan and implement a sound pre-season training program in coordination with the strength and conditioning staff.
  • Plan for all team practices to maximize time, effort, safety and skill.
  • In collaboration with the Director of Athletics, develop a balanced and challenging competition schedule.
  • Monitor and encourage the academic progress of student-athletes, culminating in their graduation.
  • Provide for the physical and mental safety and welfare of team members at all times.
  • Work with the athletic trainers to assure all team members have had physical exams and their athletic training needs have been met.
  • Prepare yearly team budget and equipment requests in conjunction with appropriate staff.
  • Recruit and retain outstanding athletes to UM program who can be academically successful.
  • Do an appropriate amount of public relations, recruiting, and development work.
  • Deal effectively with the various public and booster groups to promote the respective sports program.
  • Share as appropriate with assistant coaches and other sports staff information presented at monthly head coaches meetings.


Athletic Department employees and those University employees outside the Athletic Department with NCAA rules compliance responsibilities are subject at all times to NCAA Bylaws 10.1 and 11.1 regarding ethical conduct and the responsibility to positively contribute to a campus culture of NCAA rules compliance. Failure to conduct oneself as such will result in disciplinary or corrective action up to and including immediate discharge.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • Minimum of 5 years collegiate basketball coaching experience
  • Proven ability to recruit high quality student-athletes
  • Effective interpersonal communication skills
  • Knowledge and experience with NCAA rules and regulations
  • Ability to work with a wide variety of people
  • Strong organizational skills


Preferred Qualifications
  • Head coaching experience
  • Coaching experience at the Division I level
  • Experience recruiting in the Northwest
