Associate University Librarian for Special Collections and Director of the Beinecke Library

Yale University seeks a strategic, innovative, and collaborative leader to serve as its Associate University Librarian for Special Collections and Director of the Beinecke Library (AUL). This is a newly imagined role at Yale University Library and an exceptional opportunity to create a shared vision for Yale University Library's special collections in the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library, Divinity Library, Gilmore Music Library, Haas Arts Library, Lewis Walpole Library, Medical Historical Library, and Manuscripts and Archives. Across Yale University Library (YUL), 168 staff enable the work of special collections. The Beinecke alone is one of the world's largest libraries, serving a worldwide community of students and scholars. Its staff number 110 and its annual budget is $38 million. Together, the special collections at Yale are among the largest and most widely used special collections in the world, with Beinecke’s collections serving as a nexus for original scholarship in a wide range of disciplines.

In the last decade, Yale has made significant investments in its libraries as a whole and in special collections specifically, creating new classrooms in which students can engage in hands-on learning using rare books, manuscripts, and objects. Faculty and staff from more than 50 academic departments hold classes in the YUL special collections. The Beinecke hosts more than 600 sessions annually serving nearly 8,000 students. In addition, YUL special collections have reached out to the on- and off-campus communities with hundreds of special programs and events, with a particular focus on engaging neighbors in New Haven. Yale has also established itself as an international leader in the digital humanities and in digital preservation and has made significant contributions in special collection technologies.

The AUL will extend the developments of the recent past, looking for opportunities to bring the power of all special collections to bear in Yale's educational mission, and nurturing the cultural, structural, and operational conditions required to meet this goal. Simultaneously, the AUL will ensure that special collections are further integrated to create a unified, responsive, and welcoming user experience in YUL special collections. The position reports to the University Librarian, and successfully inhabiting the role requires close partnership with her, fellow AULs, the entire staff of special collections, and campus partners.
