Public Administration Tenure-track position in Nonprofit Theory and Management

Position Summary 

The Department of Public Administration, which is affiliated with the Mark O. Hatfield School of Government at Portland State University, seeks to fill one tenure track position at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor beginning in Fall 2021. This position calls for candidates whose core expertise lie in the areas of nonprofit management and leadership with particular emphasis in nonprofit finance, philanthropy, policy and advocacy, and/or volunteerism. Applicants whose teaching and scholarship are community engaged are particularly welcome. 

Candidates are expected to meet the following minimum qualifications: 

Earned doctorate in a relevant discipline (by position start date).  Established or developing record of published scholarship.  Demonstrated competence teaching graduate and/or undergraduate students. 

In addition to the above, it is desirable that candidates also possess the following credentials:

Expertise in policy and advocacy, finance, philanthropy, leadership, and/or management of nonprofit organizations. Demonstrated history of community engagement and collaboration.  Evidenced ability to generate funding to support research and engagement activities.

The Department seeks broadly trained candidates who are committed to its unique mission and values which focus on co-producing the public good with organizational partners in the nonprofit, for-profit and multi-jurisdictional public sectors. The Department offers and contributes to a variety of academic programs which include the following: MPA, MPA-HA, and MNL; a growing undergraduate civic leadership minor and a new undergraduate major in Urban and Public Affairs; and, graduate certificates in Energy Policy and Management, Sustainable Food Systems, Nonprofit and Public Management, and Collaborative Governance. In cooperation with the Hatfield School of Government and Department of Political Science, the Department also offers a Master of Public Policy degree (MPP) program and Public Affairs and Policy PhD program. Candidates with strong substantive areas of expertise that are relevant to these programs are therefore encouraged to apply. 

The successful candidate is expected to teach as faculty in the Department’s public administration core as well as the nonprofit leadership core and specialization courses at the graduate level, advise students, and teach undergraduate offerings that are related to nonprofit and public service. The successful candidate will also have the opportunity to participate in research and other programs and initiatives, including those offered through The Nonprofit Institute, which is housed in the Hatfield School of Government’s Center for Public Service and which supports the needs of the Oregon nonprofit community. 

The College of Urban and Public Affairs has over 89 full-time and research faculty, and approximately 1700 student majors enrolled in the College. In recent years, the Department of Public Administration has enrolled approximately 200 graduate students. In addition to the Department of Public Administration, the Mark O. Hatfield School of Government incorporates the Department of Political Science and the Department of Criminology and Criminal Justice. The College also includes the Nohad A. Toulan School of Urban Studies and Planning, the Department of Economics and the Department of International and Global Studies. Other research and service units within the College include the Center for Public Service, The Nonprofit Institute, the Institute on Aging, the Institute of Portland Metropolitan Studies, the Center for Urban Studies, the National Policy Consensus Center, the Center for Women’s Leadership, and the Center for Population Research and Census. The Department of Public Administration’s MPA is NASPAA accredited.
