Central Ohio Technical College is accepting online applications for a full-time, 9-month Composition/English instructor position.

Summary of Duties:

A full-time Composition/English Instructor is a member of the College’s English and Communications Department, which is housed in the Division of Arts and Sciences. This faculty member teaches a range of lower-division English/Composition courses; specific teaching assignments will be based in large part (but not solely) on the faculty member’s educational training and professional expertise.

Additional responsibilities include but are not limited to advising students; holding regularly scheduled office hours; serving on College committees; attending department and division meetings; developing curriculum; and engaging in ongoing course- and program-level review and assessment.

Participate in campus, faculty, professional, and community organizations and activities.

Teach a range of composition courses, including pre-college and higher-level lower-division courses; teach literature courses as necessary and per the candidate’s qualifications; work collaboratively with departmental and divisional faculty and with faculty from other areas; when necessary, assist part-time departmental faculty with course development and delivery; when necessary, work collaboratively with personnel from secondary and post-secondary institutions on matters pertaining to common or articulated English/Composition coursework and assessments; remain current in the discipline(s); prepare, present, and evaluate course materials based on performance objectives; assist with curriculum and assessment development, implementation, and evaluation; assist with the development of literature curricula; assist with program review and development; establish and maintain a positive, supportive learning environment for a diverse student population whose learning styles and educational experiences vary; participate in campus, faculty, professional, and community organizations and activities; meet with and advise students on matters pertaining to proper course selection, academic concerns, and degree requirements; refer students to appropriate resources and/or support services, and support college student service programs.

The successful candidate might be assigned to any of the College’s four campus locations as deemed necessary and might be assigned to teach some evening and/or weekend classes.

Required Qualifications:

Master’s degree in English/Literature or Composition/Rhetoric (from a regionally accredited college or university) required. Extensive knowledge of or background in current compositional theories; a working knowledge of or past training in criticism or critical theory; experience teaching lower-division and pre-college composition classes; a demonstrated commitment to the pedagogical approach underlying COTC’s Composition I and Composition II courses; a demonstrated commitment to diversity; and a demonstrated commitment to empowering students in their learning endeavors.

Preferred Qualifications:

Ph.D. (from a regionally accredited college or university) preferred. ABD status (in a course of study in English/Literature or Composition/Rhetoric at a regionally accredited college or university) secondarily preferred. Documented educational background and/or teaching experience in world literature, American literature, British literature, the literature of marginalized peoples, or another such field of specialization. Experience in teaching, or a willingness to teach, in a variety of instructional delivery modes, including the use of instructional technologies and online learning management systems. Experience teaching in a two-year college setting.

Strongest consideration will be provided to applicants with at least 1-year of experience teaching English Composition at a two-year college, and experience teaching a co-requisite English composition course.
