The School of Music at Western Michigan University seeks a talented teacher and performer of jazz drum set for a tenure-track position beginning Fall 2021. Duties include serving as an instructor of applied jazz drum set for both undergraduate and graduate students; directing small jazz ensembles as necessary and coordinate the small jazz combo program; teaching courses in the Jazz Area, including general jazz appreciation courses; engaging in service to the School, College, University, and profession; performing with the Western Jazz Collective (resident faculty ensemble); actively recruiting undergraduate and graduate students in jazz studies and performance; maintaining a record of performance and professional activities appropriate to the discipline; and other teaching and non-teaching assignments determined by school and area needs and applicant qualifications.

Minimum qualifications: master’s degree in music from an accredited school, with significant progress toward the doctorate or professional experience equivalent to doctoral work; significant professional experience in, and commitment to, performance as both an ensemble leader and with ensembles; a record of successful teaching of jazz drums at the collegiate level; strong interpersonal, communication, and collaborative skills; commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in teaching, professional activity, recruitment, and service.

Preferred qualifications: doctorate in music from an accredited school; a record of professional activities including such things as national/ international performances and master classes, publications, recordings, leadership in musical organizations.
