Baruch College – Assistant Director for Writing in Public and International Affairs
Job Description:
Baruch College’s Bernard L. Schwartz Communication Institute and
the Austin W. Marxe School of Public and International Affairs
invite applications for the position of Assistant Director for
Writing in Public and International Affairs. The Assistant Director
reports to the Director of the Bernard L. Schwartz Communication
Institute and works exclusively with Marxe’s graduate students and
faculty with leadership from Marxe’s Associate Dean for Academic
Programs.
In close partnership with faculty and colleagues in academic
support programs, the Schwartz Communication Institute cultivates
learning environments in which students become strategic,
thoughtful communicators and creators. The Institute develops and
supports Communication Intensive Courses, guides pedagogical
reflection, and fosters the teaching and learning of written, oral,
visual, and digital literacies across the College.
The mission of the Marxe School and its degree programs is to
empower the next generation of public and nonprofit leaders,
advance knowledge about public life and policy, and engage
communities across our city, nation, and world to foster effective,
inclusive institutions and societies.
At the graduate level, it offers the Master of Public
Administration, the Master of International Affairs, and the Master
of Science in Education in Higher Education Administration.
In developing and coordinating a portfolio of programmatic support
for academic writing in public and international affairs, the
Assistant Director will:
- Collaborate with Marxe faculty to assess and document writing
needs, inventory curricula, and serve as an institutional
specialist for writing across the School’s graduate programs
- Building on an established portfolio of faculty development
programming, design new and implement existing workshops, seminars,
and consultations to improve student writing
- Coordinate contextualized, course-embedded support in select core
courses in order to develop students into independent, effective
writers
- Continually refine course-embedded support, and identify
strategic opportunities for new partnerships
- Foster student success by providing and managing traditional
writing support services, such as through the established
one-to-one Marxe Writing Consultation program, the stand-alone
writing workshop series, and other programs
- Develop and share resources for faculty that ensure their access
to current writing pedagogy and practice
- Participate in the School’s ongoing learning assessment of
writing competencies in its graduate programs
- Create external reporting, both oral and written, that
communicates with a large community of diverse stakeholders, such
as the Marxe faculty, on the status of writing initiatives
- Support the development of an ongoing, faculty-led Writing Across
the Curriculum initiative at Marxe by building relationships,
liaising, and providing expertise
- Participate in meetings of Marxe’s Learning Assessment and
Curriculum Committees
- Contribute to a culture of engagement, curiosity, collaboration,
and happiness at the Schwartz Communication Institute
- Provide leadership and service within the Schwartz Communication
Institute as appropriate

Qualifications:
The Assistant Director for Writing in Public and International
Affairs must hold a Bachelor’s degree and have four years of
relevant experience.
Preferred Qualifications:
A terminal degree, or significant progress to completion, in
English, Communication Studies, Writing, Rhetoric and Composition,
the scholarship of teaching and learning, or a closely related
field is strongly preferred. Additional preferred qualifications
include:
- Demonstrated excellence as a teacher, in both classroom settings
and more intimate learning environments such as Writing
Centers
- Curriculum development and instructional design experience
- Knowledge of WAC/WID programming and writing in the social
sciences
- Organizational and planning skills
- The ability to lead educators in professional and pedagogical
development
