The Assistant Director reports to the Director of the Bernard L. Schwartz Communication Institute and works exclusively with Marxe’s graduate students and faculty with leadership from Marxe’s Associate Dean for Academic Programs.

In close partnership with faculty and colleagues in academic support programs, the Schwartz Communication Institute cultivates learning environments in which students become strategic, thoughtful communicators and creators. The Institute develops and supports Communication Intensive Courses, guides pedagogical reflection, and fosters the teaching and learning of written, oral, visual, and digital literacies across the College.

The mission of the Marxe School and its degree programs is to empower the next generation of public and nonprofit leaders, advance knowledge about public life and policy, and engage communities across our city, nation, and world to foster effective, inclusive institutions and societies.
At the graduate level, it offers the Master of Public Administration, the Master of International Affairs, and the Master of Science in Education in Higher Education Administration.

In developing and coordinating a portfolio of programmatic support for academic writing in public and international affairs, the Assistant Director will:

- Collaborate with Marxe faculty to assess and document writing needs, inventory curricula, and serve as an institutional specialist for writing across the School’s graduate programs
- Building on an established portfolio of faculty development programming, design new and implement existing workshops, seminars, and consultations to improve student writing
- Coordinate contextualized, course-embedded support in select core courses in order to develop students into independent, effective writers
- Continually refine course-embedded support, and identify strategic opportunities for new partnerships
- Foster student success by providing and managing traditional writing support services, such as through the established one-to-one Marxe Writing Consultation program, the stand-alone writing workshop series, and other programs
- Develop and share resources for faculty that ensure their access to current writing pedagogy and practice
- Participate in the School’s ongoing learning assessment of writing competencies in its graduate programs
- Create external reporting, both oral and written, that communicates with a large community of diverse stakeholders, such as the Marxe faculty, on the status of writing initiatives
- Support the development of an ongoing, faculty-led Writing Across the Curriculum initiative at Marxe by building relationships, liaising, and providing expertise
- Participate in meetings of Marxe’s Learning Assessment and Curriculum Committees
- Contribute to a culture of engagement, curiosity, collaboration, and happiness at the Schwartz Communication Institute
- Provide leadership and service within the Schwartz Communication Institute as appropriate
