Penn State Harrisburg invites applications for a Director of Academic Support and Advising Services to provide leadership for all operations and programs of the Lambert Undergraduate Advising Center and the Russell E. Horn Learning Center. The Director will be responsible for:
  • Designing, managing, and assessing the Advising Center and Learning Center programs and policies
  • Training and supervising professional staff including assistant directors, advisers, coordinators, staff assistants, as well as peer tutors and peer advisers and graduate assistants
  • Planning and administering assigned budgets
  • Developing strategic plans
  • Partnering with faculty, other academic affairs units, and student affairs
  • Maintaining a nationally certified peer tutoring training program


Reporting to the Assistant Dean for Academic Affairs, this position will direct the college's academic support services by overseeing academic advising, tutoring/learning support services, and orientation and transition programs that serve undergraduate and graduate students.

The Director will also administer New Student Orientation for first-year students, as well as the college's academic orientation program for transfer, change of campus, and re-enrolling students. Additionally, this role will have the opportunity to provide leadership for the campus' summer bridge program, as well as the academic components of the First-Year Engagement plan for the campus. The Director will also be tasked with managing the co-curricular activities utilized within the First-Year Experience courses.

As the Director of Academic Support and Advising Services, you will provide critical leadership in the development and implementation of student success and retention outreach programs and initiatives. In this position you will oversee the re-enrollment review process for all students returning to the college who have been dismissed due to unsatisfactory academic performance, coordinate the Academic Warning and Suspension process for the college, and provide direction and oversight for initiatives and outreach for the academic success and support of special and at-risk populations. You will also direct the utilization and training for student success tools (Starfish) for the campus and direct the management of and response to student academic challenges.

You will advise School Directors, Program Coordinators, and the Registrar on the offerings and delivery for lower-division courses. You will disseminate information to professional and faculty advisors, staff, and students on changes in programs, curricula, policies, and procedures, including maintenance of the college's website for academic advising and tutoring/learning support and overseeing the maintenance of the Suggested Academic Plans for the College.

This position will also serve as the primary liaison for the college with academic colleges at University Park and other Commonwealth campuses on academic advising and tutoring/academic support issues and participate on other college and university-wide committees engaged in strategic planning, decision-making, policy development and problem-solving for university-wide and campus-wide issues.

The position requires a Master's degree or higher (Ph.D. is preferred), plus eight years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. This position will require the successful completion of standard background checks.
