General Summary/Purpose:

Under the general supervision of a faculty investigator, the lab manager is responsible for overall functioning of the Brain Signatures Lab, running advanced assays, compliance with regulations, lab database management and integrity of freezer inventory.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Work requires precision and attention to detail. Individual should have strong written communication and interpersonal skills. Must have the ability to read and interpret direction, both oral and written, organize and prioritize work and follow through on assignments. Must be able to work successfully as part of a team in a high volume, dynamic laboratory and manage research assistants and coordinators.
  • Follows established procedures or protocols to perform advanced laboratory tests and/or experiments.
  • Work requires basic use of scientific methods, procedures and techniques gained through previous training and experience and through specific training upon assuming this position.
  • Supervises and maintains lab inventory levels of reagents, kits and chemicals.
  • Supervises and maintains log of weekly/monthly instrument calibration and validation protocols and maintain detailed logs of each instrument.
  • Our lab like several other department laboratories monitors biospecimen inventory in -80 freezers 24/7. Rotating schedules to monitor freezer temperatures include weekend and holiday assignments and the need to come in when on call in case of an emergency.

Minimum Qualifications (mandatory):

    Bachelor’s degree in biology, neuroscience, or related field. 5 years related laboratory experience. Proven technical knowledge and laboratory experience. Master's degree, with related graduate research, may substitute for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

JHU Equivalency Formula:18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree, with related graduate research
  • Experience running ELISAs, Western Blots, DNA extraction,

Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

    High level of organizational skills. Experience in managing laboratory research projects and supervising personnel.
  • Knowledge of physiology, neuroscience, and biochemistry.
  • Knowledge of biosafety and radioactive materials
  • Ability to operate and maintain laboratory equipment in a specialty lab.
  • Computer competency is required. Strong analytical background is highly desirable.
  • Strong written and verbal communication, interpersonal, and training skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with ability to work with many different faculty members, postdoctoral fellows, and technicians.
  • Ability to make independent judgments and to act on decisions on a regular basis.
  • Ability to work on own initiative and with limited direction. Ability to prioritize own work and to multi-task.
  • Ability to use SAP for ordering and managing expenditures.
  • Experience coordinating, conducting and managing studies.
  • Supervise laboratory professionals such as Laboratory Technologists/Technicians, research/study coordinators.

Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
