General Summary/Purpose:

Part time (60%) position whose purpose is to assist 3 PIs with laboratory administrative duties.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Processing orders for 3 laboratories including:
  • Placing orders requested by lab members,
  • Tracking spending on PIs grants,
  • Working with vendors to negotiate favorable rates,
  • Contacting vendors to identify substitutes or ETAs when items are backordered or no longer available
  • Working with financial administrators to identify spending that can be adjusted as needed
  • Maintain paperwork such as invoices for auditing purposes
  • Keep clear records for orders accessible by all PIs and lab members
  • Maintain laboratory equipment:
  • Keeping service contracts up to date and scheduling PMs and maintenance as needed
  • Performing regular cleaning routines on instruments as needed
  • Examples of such instrument include freezers, cryostats, centrifuges, flow cytometers, etc.
  • Assisting with primary cell culture as needed from PIs – including tissue processing, cell isolation, and culture in preparation of other lab members experiments
  • Assisting with clinical sample processing to support PIs clinical research. Examples include centrifuging and collecting serum and plasma, isolating PBMCs from peripheral blood, and isolating DNA from whole blood samples
  • Assisting as needed with various other misc. laboratory tasks that are both administrative and experimental in nature.
  • Minimum Qualifications (mandatory):

      High School Diploma/GED and some college coursework in the Biological Sciences required.
    • Requires minimum of one year of related laboratory experience.

    Preferred Qualifications:

    • Experience with Hopkins SAP ordering and financial system.
    • Three (3) year related laboratory experience preferred (including experience with mammalian cell culture).

    The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
