The University of Alaska invites applications for the position of Chancellor of University of Alaska Anchorage (UAA). The Chancellor serves as the university's chief executive officer and is appointed by and reports to the University of Alaska (UA) System President.

UAA is located in the heart of Alaska’s largest city and is the state’s largest post-secondary institution. The campus is nestled in the middle of a greenbelt, surrounded by lakes, ponds and wildlife, and is connected to a city-wide trail system perfect for students’ active lifestyles. UAA consists of the main campus in Anchorage and community campuses located in the Matanuska Valley, Valdez, Kodiak and the Kenai Peninsula . UAA offers many career pathway programs featuring associate’s, baccalaureate and master’s degrees, as well as vocational and professional certificates in more than 150 major study areas, including arts, sciences, business, education, human services and health sciences. The Chancellor's established office is located on the Anchorage campus.

Duties: Serves as the University of Alaska Anchorage (UAA) chief executive officer. Exercises broad authority over and is responsible for all aspects of the administration and strategic direction of UAA. Advances the mission and vision of the university. Maintains a deep connection with and commitment to the State of Alaska and all of its people. In consultation with university governance groups, sets strategic priorities. Leads the university's administration of quality instruction, research, outreach, finance and operations, safety, philanthropy and university advancement, and student service and life programs. Consults with UAA Board of Advisors. Appoints a chief academic officer, senior administrators, faculty, professors emeritus and emerita, and individuals to campus and college councils. Designates a chief financial officer. Makes determinations on promotion and tenure. Establishes committees for the naming of facilities and nomination of honorary degree and meritorious service award recipients. Oversees development of UAA budget. Works with the Vice Chancellors to allocate funding to fulfill UAA’s mission and achieve its strategic goals. Ensures deficit spending does not occur. Establishes course, use, service and administrative fees. When delegated by the president, waives tuition and fees. Serves on the UA President's Cabinet and collaborates with the UA System Office, University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF), and the University of Alaska Southeast (UAS). Builds on existing synergies. Advances items for the UA Board of Regents’ meeting agendas. Actively participates in Board of Regents meetings. Other duties as assigned by the president. Builds and maintains external relationships critical to the success of UAA. These relationships include, but are not limited to: community and corporate partners; local, state and national policy makers; private donors; and other national and international university leaders. Represents the university as appropriate in Alaska, nationally, and internationally. Develops, updates and presents to the UA Board of Regents campus master plans. Prepares annual capital plans. Establishes committees for the naming of facilities. The next Chancellor will lead UAA at a time of diminishing resources and as a result, they must possess solid budgetary and management skills and experience as well as a strong disposition to advocate with the Board of Regents, UA President, fellow UA Chancellors, and state government officials.

The Chancellor exercises broad authority over and is responsible for all aspects of the administration of UAA. The Chancellor:

    Advances the mission and vision of the University, builds and maintains external relationships (including corporate partners and private donors) critical to the success of the University.

    Serves on the University of Alaska President's Cabinet and leadership team (the Summit Team) and collaborates with the University of Alaska System, University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF), and University of Alaska Southeast (UAS).

    Leads Chancellor's Cabinet and the University's administration of instruction, finance and operations, safety, and student service and life programs, effectively advancing the recruitment and retention of quality faculty, staff, and students, and providing a quality education for students.

    Develops, updates, and presents to the UA Board of Regents campus master plans.

    Prepares annual capital plans.

    Advances items for the UA Board of Regents’ meeting agendas and actively participates in Board of Regents' meetings.

    Appoints a chief academic officer, senior administrators, faculty, professors emeritus and emerita, and individuals to university councils. Designates a chief financial officer.

    Makes determinations on promotion and tenure. Establishes committees for the naming of facilities and nomination of honorary degree and meritorious service award recipients.

    Oversees development of UAA budget. Ensures deficit spending does not occur.

    Interprets and applies UA Board of Regent policies, University regulations, collective bargaining agreements, FERPA, institutional and specialized accreditation standards and policies, memorandums of agreement.

Required Experience:

  • At least 7 years executive level administrative experience in higher education.
  • Substantial additional executive, faculty, researcher, and/or management experience at a university or a major research organization.
  • Experience in a public higher education institution and multi-campus system.
  • Experience working successfully in a collective bargaining environment.
  • Experience working in or clear understanding of the mission of an open enrollment institution.

Required Education or Training:

Master's degree in a relevant field with significant experience in complex organizations. Terminal degree preferred.
