Postdoctoral Research Scientist, Informed Healthcare Decision Making and Effective Communication
Postdoctoral Research Scientist
Research Group for Informed Healthcare Decision Making and Effective Communication
A position for a postdoctoral research scientist is available in the research laboratory of Laura A. Siminoff, PhD, professor of Public Health Social and Behavioral Sciences and Dean of the Temple University College of Public Health. Dr. Siminoff is also affiliated with Fox Chase Cancer Center.
The Siminoff Research Group Lab. Health communication is at the heart of how patients and clinicians make decisions about health and wellness—whether it is a decision to take a particular treatment for a life-threatening disease such as cancer, to donate a deceased loved one’s organs for transplantation, or to obtain screening for colon cancer. Dean Laura A. Siminoff leads a team of researchers who focus on understanding how people communicate about health and the impact of communication on health-related behaviors and decisions. The team has recently focused on areas of organ and tissue donation for transplantation and research, cancer treatment, end-of-life decision-making, and family burden providing care to dying patients. The team develops mixed methods, including direct observation, to answer these complex questions.
The lab’s other focus is developing strategies and interventions to improve and enhance health communication and outcomes and the development of measurement tools. Examples are the development of a computer program to facilitate qualitative coding, SimCode, and structured measurement scales such as the Cancer Communication Assessment Tool for Patients and Families (CCAT-PF). A major focus has also been the development of a communication skills training tool for Organ Procurement Organization staff who discuss donation options with the families of deceased patients. The intervention, Communicating Effectively about Organ Donation (CEaD), has been developed for organ donation for transplantation, tissue donation for research, and decision to donate for vascularized composite allotransplantation.
The Position. The ideal candidate is self-motivated, has the ability to develop innovative ideas and understands multimethod research. The ideal candidate will work well in a collaborative environment, have excellent quantitative and qualitative analytic skills, and have strong writing skills. Tasks and responsibilities would include writing research publications and grant proposals in partnership with the research group, data analysis and management, providing input and assistance with data collection activities, and other similar undertakings associated with having a productive and successful research career.
- Doctoral degree in public health, social sciences, or other relevant discipline.
- Experience and interest in health communication and decision sciences in clinical and healthcare settings.
- Previous work in health disparities is desirable.
Application. Candidates should submit their cover letter, current CV and three references (one reference should be from the candidate's doctoral or other direct research supervisor). It is recommended that candidates include in their cover letter their prior research experience and interest in the relevant research work currently conducted in the laboratory. Please submit application materials to Ms. Kimberly Wing at email@example.com.
