Sets up, prepares phlebotomy lab for instructional sessions, and cleans up lab afterward. Observes students performing blood draw procedures, ensuring safety protocol and procedures are followed. May assist individual students or groups with use of equipment. Required Qualifications:
Education and Experience: Position requires high school diploma or equivalent, and must be a certified Medical Assistant, or must have completed an accredited phlebotomy program and be ASCP certified, plus a minimum of one year full-time experience working in a laboratory or doctor office performing blood draws; OR have the equivalent of two years full-time experience performing blood draws.
Knowledge and Skills: Must have a working knowledge of instructional techniques and phlebotomy skills and their application, sufficient to instruct and tutor students in a lab/classroom setting. Considerable technical knowledge in the specific laboratory area of phlebotomy or medical assisting is required. Must understand OSHA guidelines as related to phlebotomy. Must be able to communicate effectively to interact with and assist students.
Abilities: Must be able to set up and maintain laboratory and equipment in a clean and functional manner, following all safety protocol and procedures. Requires the ability to set up student projects meeting the instructional goals of the faculty. Must be able to assist students in CLIA waived laboratory procedures. Requires the ability to perform phlebotomy with syringe, vacutainer, and butterfly methods. Must be able to communicate effectively in formal and informal settings with students, instructors, and other interested parties. Preferred Qualifications: Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
Requires sufficient hand, arm, and finger dexterity to operate laboratory equipment. Must be able to use a computer and keyboard. Requires hearing and speaking skills sufficient to communicate effectively with staff and students. Requires visual acuity to read words and numbers and operate lab equipment. Must be able to move among students within a lab/classroom environment to provide individual support.
Work is performed indoors with potential exposure to health or safety hazards. Requires lifting light to medium weight materials up to 25 pounds. Some tasks require special handling due to hazards and contaminants. Essential Duties:
Assists in setting up materials and equipment needed for lab procedures, and with clean up afterward. Returns equipment and puts items away following lab sessions.
Observes students performing blood draw procedures, ensuring that safety protocol and procedures are followed. Offers suggestions for improvement if needed. May assist students with use of equipment and demonstrate proper blood draw technique.
Ensures all required supplies and equipment are available and in working order for instruction.
Proctors tests as needed.
