Job Summary

The Lecturer, Technical Director, Scene Shop Manager position is a full-time, non-tenure track, faculty position, and is responsible for:

  • maintaining primary oversight and leadership of construction of scenery and props for Theatre and Dance productions;
  • teaching courses in design, technology, construction, management, and general theatre;
  • mentoring student staff, technicians, and crew members with a student-centric approach aimed at providing opportunities to develop student skill, independence, and agency;
  • producing quality scenery, sets, and props that complement and support theatre and dance presentations by assisting the director, artistic director, designers, and production manager in the development of productions;
  • managing the department’s scenic and properties shop(s) and workflow constructing, transporting, loading-in, and striking of sets for production season including approximately 3 mainstage shows and an array of support smaller productions for both theatre and dance;
  • leading and training student crews in the building and construction of scenery and props for the season of shows;
  • coordinating the safety of all cast members and crews throughout all phases of scenery construction and installation;
  • supervising practicum and stagecraft courses by instructing them in the technical aspects and safety procedures of scenic construction, assigning tasks to student assistants and crews, supervising students in the operation of various power tools, evaluating the students’ work and providing an assessment to faculty;
  • working with various internal and external individuals and groups to ensure proper use, care, maintenance, and safety of Departmental facilities and production spaces
  • ensuring the production of scenic and prop elements remains on schedule by determining the kind and amount of materials required, the tools or equipment needed, the order and sequence involved in the fabrication, and the time required to meet production deadlines;
  • inventory, supervising care, and maintenance of scene shop tools and equipment;
  • shopping for and purchasing materials needed for scenic and prop construction;
  • attending design and production meetings as required;
  • maintaining an up-to-date record of expenses and managing receipts;
  • providing focus on innovating and advancing ideas and practices in theatrical design and technology;
  • working within professional networks and organizations beyond the University;
  • assisting with recruiting and retention efforts for the Department in order to grow and sustain the DTM area
  • working with other Theatre and Dance faculty to develop curriculum and projects aimed specifically to students with goals and interests in the field of Design/Technology/Management;
  • and contributing to the overall success of the Department of Theatre and Dance by engaging in Study, Artistry, Humanity, and Outreach.

 

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master’s degree or 18 hours of graduate study in technical theatre, design and technology, or related field
    Minimum of three years of teaching experience
  • Professional or industry experience in theatre and dance production and a working knowledge of the performing arts industry and current standards and trends
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD, Vectorworks, and other digital rendering techniques
  • Proficiency in woodworking, rigging, welding and other traditional methods of fabrication, construction, and making; Interest and experience with innovative design/tech methods and technologies
  • Extensive knowledge of safe use of equipment
