The University of Wisconsin-Stout (UW-Stout) is seeking a collaborative leader to help grow the research enterprise as Wisconsin’s Polytechnic University. UW-Stout's research portfolio is poised for development, as the university formalizes its 2030 strategic plan and continues to build on its tenets of applied learning, research, collaboration, and career focus. The Director of ORSP will help support and promote research and scholarship among interdisciplinary university members, including both undergraduate and graduate students, and serve as UW-Stout's lead research administrator of extramural and intramural research funds.  

UW-Stout is seeking a Director with strategic vision, strong supervisory and time management skills, and a commitment to understanding research leadership in support of UW-Stout's polytechnic mission and strategic priorities. The Director will lead a cohesive office team, in a dynamic post-pandemic higher-education environment, and be responsible for ethical conduct of research, requisite compliance, and administration of University contracts and non-purchasing agreements. It is expected that the Director will help drive increases in UW-Stout's externally funded grants, contracts, cooperative and other agreements, in partnership with campus stakeholders.  

A direct report to the Provost/Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs, the Director is a full-time annual appointment. The anticipated start date for this position is July 1, 2021.  

QUALIFICATIONS  

Minimum / Required

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution
  • Demonstrated success working with funded programs, specifically those sponsored by federal agencies
  • Two years of experience in a management or supervisory capacity
  • Broad knowledge of and experience with all aspects of research and sponsored program administration and the award life cycle, pre- through post-award
  • Demonstrated experience and ability to apply the principles and regulatory framework of the Federal Office of Management and Budget (OMB) including financial management and regulatory policies such as Uniform Guidance, Federal Acquisition Regulations, and Single Audit
  • Familiarity with electronic research administration tools (e.g., Research.gov, Grants.gov, eRA commons, etc.)
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Experience with Institutional Review Board for the Protection of Human Subjects (IRB) and Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) processes and procedures

Highly Desired / Preferred

  • Master's degree, or terminal academic degree
  • Certified Research Administrator
  • NCURA (National Council of University Research Administrators) Sponsored Project Administration Fundamentals, or equivalent training
  • Three or more years of demonstrated leadership experience in higher education grants management, ethical conduction of research, or similar functions in higher education
  • Familiarity with ethical research practices, including human subjects requirements and related protocol
  • Demonstrated experience managing the development and submission of funded extramural and intramural applications
  • Demonstrated strategic leadership
  • Demonstrated success working effectively with a diverse pool of principal investigators, faculty and senior campus leadership, as well as a broad range of other internal and external stakeholders

As the central service unit for research endeavors, this office office provides assistance from the initial research idea to the proposal submission and much more.
