For many years, we focused on applied and collaborative degrees, certificates and diplomas. In 2007, we began offering our own baccalaureate degrees and became a university in 2009.

Mount Royal University is located in the traditional territories of the Niitsitapi (Blackfoot) and the people of the Treaty 7 region in southern Alberta, which includes the Siksika, the Piikani, the Kainai, the Tsuut'ina and the Îyârhe Nakoda. We are situated on land where the Bow River meets the Elbow River. The traditional Blackfoot name of this place is "Mohkinstsis." The city of Calgary is also home to the Métis Nation.

Bissett School of Business offers education in all major areas of management and business administration, including degrees, certificates and a diploma in aviation. The School has dedicated itself to providing an education that is on the leading edge of global business trends and community relevance. The Bachelor of Business Administration offers students opportunity to specialize in one of seven majors, including Accounting, Finance, General Management, Human Resources, International Business, Marketing and Supply Chain Management. Also, the school offers a General Management major that allows students to specialize in other fields of business, including Innovation and Entrepreneurship and Social Innovation.

School of Communication Studies specializes in connecting communication concepts and theories to real-life experiences, Mount Royal's School of Communication Studies prepares you for a diverse and rewarding career. As part of the Faculty of Business and Communication Studies, communication students in all four disciplines in Broadcast Media Studies, Journalism, Information Design, and Public Relations.

The Dean, Business and Communication Studies is the chief academic and administrative officer of the Faculty and is a member of the Deans’ Council. The Dean is responsible for providing strong leadership and vision in the articulation and implementation of the Faculty’s evolving strategic plan in alignment with the mission and vision of Mount Royal University. The Dean will plan and evaluate academic programs, facilities and equipment needs and financial strategies, and coordinate the work of all departments to maximize learning opportunities for students, working to realize University objectives. The Dean will also advance and support the University’s focus on Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) and Indigenization Strategic Plan. Mount Royal University is committed to cultivating an equitable, diverse, and inclusive environment by providing opportunities for all students, faculty, and staff to develop skills that will enable effective interactions with people across cultures and underrepresented populations.

Reporting to the Provost and Vice-President, Academic, the Dean, Business and Communication Studies has responsibility for approximately: 3,200 full-time-equivalent students in all programs; 84 full-time and 112 contract faculty; 28 staff providing administrative, advising, and experiential learning support; and a $19 million budget (expenses only).

Through familiarity with the instructional programs of their departments, overall University goals and objectives, and the overall needs of the University, the Dean provides leadership, coordination, and facilitation of learning and administrative activities in the Faculty and the University. The Dean provides relevant operating information for the formulation of policy and priorities, participates in the assessment of the information and advises the Provost and Vice-President, Academic about policies and priorities. The Dean is actively engaged with the community, aware of provincial government priorities as well as related industry/employer needs, and excels at building relationships with external stakeholders, community leaders, and philanthropists. The Dean will foster a culture of fundraising and community-sourced donations. To articulate a clear vision for the role of community partnerships in the development of the Faculty and have an entrepreneurial spirit for fundraising and donor development.

The ideal candidate is a forward-thinking visionary with outstanding leadership qualities and experience in administration gained within a post-secondary institution. A successful background managing budgets, faculty, staff, and students is required, and applicants shall demonstrate experience working with fundraising, grants and related processes for research. The successful candidate is a collaborative leader, one who is entrepreneurial, fosters innovation, and is capable of rallying and mentoring staff and faculty by creating a diverse, equitable and inclusive culture.  Strong business acumen including strategic and operational planning, with an understanding of the corporate world is required, and candidates must be adept at building strong relationships and partnerships with diverse external stakeholders. A demonstrated ability to engage and cultivate relationships with alumni, major individual and corporate donors and partners, government officials, and the broader community stakeholders is also required. Doctoral degree, PhD or DBA preferred, Master's degree with relevant experience would be considered.
