Michigan State University Out-of-State Admissions Counselor | Admissions Counselor
The Office of Admissions is seeking an admissions counselor to join MSUs energetic regional recruitment team with a goal to increase and diversify out-of-state enrollment from Southern California (and the Southwestern US). This a full-time, remote position and requires a proven, self-motivated, self-driven team member to work independently but with the support of nine fellow regional recruiters. This counselor will closely coordinate with MSUs Northern California Regional Representative, and work directly with students/families, high school and independent counselors, and community-based organizations to expand and build MSU's national outreach. This position will include travel when restrictions are loosened, including high school visits, meetings with students/families, in-person college fairs, community presentations, and will be required to travel to MSUs campus in East Lansing, at minimum, two to four times each year in addition to regional travel. However, this team member will be given autonomy to create and manage his/her own territory, as well as be encouraged to use creativity and collaboration to reimagine the traditional recruitment model in this new era of virtual recruitment. Start date negotiable, but no later than July 1, 2021.
Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four year college degree program; six months to one year of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in admissions, counseling, public relations, student services or related area, including implementing programs and schedules, making formal presentations, and working with the public; experience with database, spreadsheet, desk top publishing and/or presentation software; or an equivalent combination of education and experience; may require conversational proficiency in a foreign language.
The Admissions Counselor must be enthusiastic, people-oriented, and enjoy working with high school and college students as well as parents and guidance counselors. He/She must have an ability to communicate effectively (both in oral and written form) to inspire interest in MSU with prospective students, and have strong presentation skills, ideally to large and diverse audiences. A successful candidate will have exceptional organizational skills, be willing to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced, goal-driven environment, and maintain a positive attitude. Minimum two years of experience preferred; This position requires knowledge of basic personal computer terminology and operations, as well as virtual technology platforms, the ability to travel throughout the region, and the ability to travel overnight and work nights and weekends. Candidates with the following are strongly desired, and preferred: A candidate currently living in Southern California (with knowledge of primary recruitment territory). Experience with Slate and/or similar CRM platforms, as well as virtual fair platforms (with thorough knowledge of Zoom). Proven track record of success working independently, but who also enjoys working with a team. Highly energetic, enthusiastic and experienced presenter.
