The Hampton Roads Biomedical Research Consortium (HRBRC) at Old Dominion University is seeking candidates for three Senior Project Scientist (full-time, 12 month) positions. This position conducts and supervises basic and applied biomedical, digital population health, public health, cybersecurity, and information technology engineering research initiatives. This position may serve as principal investigator or co-principal investigator for sponsored research projects and is responsible for the proper completion of statements of work under delivery orders or contracts. Other key areas of responsibility include:

  • The establishment, operation, maintenance, and governance of physical and cloud-based data lakes for healthcare, digital population health, and other related disciplines.
  • Lead data modeling, simulation, analysis, and visualization research teams by creating the research team group, setting milestones and deliverable dates, and ensuring that the team works efficiently and effectively as a cohesive unit.
  • Prepare monthly status reports on research projects for submission to government, academic and industry sponsors by providing status updates on milestones, deliverables, actions items and potential areas of concern.
  • Conduct In-progress review (IPR) meetings with government, academic and industry sponsors by scheduling the meetings, sending meeting announcements, setting meeting agenda, developing the presentations, and facilitating the meeting.
  • Maintain consistent familiarity with software and hardware tools as they relate to both data lake infrastructures and modeling, simulation, analysis, and visualization applications by attending conferences and other training seminars.
  • Conduct, collaborate and participate in the development of future projects with regional, state, and national partners in academia, medicine, industry, and government.
  • Develop and maintain computer software and hardware skills aligned with best practices for physical and cloud-based data lake security, maintenance, operation, support, and government.
  • Develop and participate in activities that support the broader research community by providing instruction and conducting training (such as outreach events, community and entrepreneurial ecosystem activities, and STEM-related events).

Required Education: Master’s degree in computer science, computer programming, information technology, engineering or other related stem discipline OR a bachelor’s degree, in the same fields of study, with equivalent related experience to equate to a master’s degree may be substituted.

Required Qualifications: Professional experience in data technologies as data engineer, software developer, or related role. Experience with Cloud Data Platforms (Amazon, Google, and/or Azure) and/or experience building and maintaining on-premises Data Platforms. Experience in creating dashboards and data visualizations. Experience in creating Data Lake, Data Warehouse, Analytical data models and/or STAR schemas. Experience in applying data governance standards and creating technical data dictionary. Working knowledge of managing data sensitivity, data privacy, and security. Demonstrated ability to exercise independent judgement, set priorities, evaluate results, and coordinate work with others. Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications: Knowledge in leveraging any of AI/ML/DL techniques, Graph Technologies, NLP, and Text Analytics. Understanding of ETL/ELT pipelines and Data Warehousing design, tooling, and support. Understanding of different data formatting (JSON, CSV, XML) and data storage techniques (3NF, EAV Model, Star Schema, Data Lake). Familiarity within an integrated development environment (IDE). Demonstrated ability to prepare written correspondence, technical reports, proposals and other pertinent documents as they relate to research. Demonstrated ability to develop and conduct independent research including opportunity identification, proposal preparation and award management as project manager or principal investigator. Experience with scripting using Python, SQL, Stored procedures, power-shell, JavaScript or other scripting languages. Experience building data pipelines to ingest structured, semi-structured datasets using files, API, streams, and RDBMS. Experience in SDLC Processes, CI/CD, Agile Methodologies, and/or modern DevOps practices. Experience with near real-time stream data processing.
