General Summary/Purpose:

Manage chemistry laboratory sessions for the introductory chemistry lab, the applied chemical equilibrium and reactivity lab, and the chemistry lab sessions held through KSAS Summer Programs. Under minimal supervision of the instructors, primary oversight and responsibility for solutions prep and chemical inventory management. Ensure lab materials and instruments are prepared prior to the start of class, instrumentation maintenance occurs periodically, and safety standards are met and maintained during active lab hours. Supervise Laboratory Coordinator.

Support the following chemistry courses:report to instructors of each course but require minimal supervision from the instructors during the execution of tasks.

• Introduction to Chemistry Labs: AS 030.105 & AS 030.106

• Chemical Equilibrium and Reactivity (w/Lab): AS 030.103

• KSAS Summer Programs: AS 030.105 & AS 030.106

• Quantitative Analytical Lab: AS 030.245

• Physical Chemistry Instrumentation Labs: AS 030.305 & AS 030.306

Specific Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Performance Management: (For employees who supervise others.)
  • Supervise UTL Lab Coordinator
  • Examples of Measures for Performance Management:
  • Staff member is mentored, trained, and provided performance feedback
  • Laboratory Management:
  • Oversee Lab Coordinator’s responsibilities
  • Daily supervision of Intro Chemistry Lab Teaching Assistants
  • Primary safety manager for the following labs:
  • UTL G82-G88, 286 – 298
  • Maintain functional integrity of 8 lab spaces
  • Manage weekly TA help session schedules for Intro Chemistry Lab
  • Coordinate with facilities and faculty the decommissioning of lab spaces during times of elongated lab closure
  • Manage the Glove Recycling Program for Intro Chemistry labs
  • Clean lab spaces thoroughly (benches and hoods) after each semester
  • “Oversee spending on Instructional Account (approx. 185K) for accuracy of expenditures and reporting on spending trends.” **** Budget and financial tracking and processing???
  • Lab classes are held in a clean, safe environment
  • HSE inspections find minimal to no infractions
  • Intro Chemistry Lab Training of Teaching Assistants
  • Proper waste disposal methods used in each experiment
  • Proper safety measures taken when a student is injured in lab
  • How to properly address:
  • fires
  • broken glass
  • acid spills
  • base spills
  • biohazardous waste
  • equipment failures
  • how and when to use the emergency eye wash stations and emergency showers
  • Provide each TA with the required solutions and equipment to conduct each lab experiment and supervise them as they complete the experiments
  • Develop and edit weekly TA Experimental Pamphlet
  • Provide and collect from each TA the “TA Lab Space Contract”
  • Throughout the semester, monitors Teaching Assistant performance, report performance issues to instructor
  • Teaching Assistants are fully trained and prepared prior to the start of each semester
  • Each Teaching Assistant’s fully understands the chemistry concepts taught over the semester
  • Teaching Assistants are familiar with lab equipment, lab protocols, and teaching objectives
  • D. Laboratory Maintenance and Assistance
  • Prepare equipment and chemicals/solutions for upcoming lab experiments
  • Clean/fix/maintain lab equipment
  • Coordinate with lab staff to properly dispone of chemical waste using appropriate safety measures
  • Troubleshoot problems and assist students who are struggling with equipment issues
  • Organize and manage the CBI Annual Retreat. Solicit speakers, attendees and poster presenters; book location; order catering; create/print program and name badges.
  • Lab classes are held in a clean, safe environment
  • Handles multi tasks and prioritizes workload to meet deadlines
  • Demonstrates initiative and problem solving approach allowing courses to proceed on schedule
  • E. Inventory Management
  • Prepare and maintain an updated inventory of all chemicals
  • Determine identify and quantity of chemicals needed for experiments
  • Databases are updated with reasonable timeliness.
  • Stock is on hand for experiments as needed
Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma/GED and some college coursework in the Biological Sciences required.
  • One (1) year of related lab experiencerequired.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree preferred.
  • Five (5) years of technical experience
  • Training Certificate from Technical Institute preferred.
  • Educational background in Chemistry highly preferred or ACS Certification.

Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Must be able to work well under deadlines and coordinate multiple projects at one time.
  • Work independently to resolve problems in an efficient and diplomatic manner.
  • Excellent computer skills (word processing, spreadsheet and database).
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, and to work as a team player.
  • Excellent organizational skills with attention to detail; ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously & effectively, & work with diverse groups of constituents; ability to work in a dynamic, fast paced environment, making independent decisions and the discernment to know when such independence is warranted; ability to work as part of an effective team.
