The Assistant Director works as an integral part of the Student Success Center (SSC) team and will be responsible for the implementation of programs and services designed to support LSUS students and assist in their academic success. The Assistant Director will be effective in utilizing metacognition to support the overall mission of the SSC. Metacognition equips students with the necessary tools to develop critical thinking skills, build self-confidence, and navigate their college careers to gain a bearing on success.

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Assist with center development: provide targeted academic support to identified populations; promote academic success through strategic use of resources; participate in assessment and student data-driven decision making; collaborate with campus partners to strengthen efforts; and contribute to graduate assistant training and development.
  • Oversee daily operations of learning program areas: academic coaching, peer coaching training, tutoring, supplemental instruction, workshop development, leadership development, and outreach efforts.
  • Design and facilitate workshops focused on learning and study skills that directly support students’ development.
  • Maintain a case load of students and develop individualized plans for academic skills and learning enhancements.
  • Track and assess the effectiveness of academic supports within the center.
  • Manage the communications, promotions, and public relations for the center.
  • Assist with supporting faculty to enhance student learning and develop success strategies in programs.
  • Work collaboratively with other members of Student Development, especially Disability Support, and across academic departments to identify students in need and support their learning strategies.
  • Assist students in connecting and maximizing usage of institutional and community resources.
  • Stay current with best practices related to administration of peer mentoring, tutoring, educational outreach, assessment, success coaching, and other academic success strategies.
  • Adhere to confidentiality guidelines (FERPA).
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

 

 

Qualifications

Education:

  • Required: Bachelor’s degree
  • Preferred: Master’s Degree in higher education administration, college student affairs, counseling, education or other relevant disciplines
  • Experience:
  • Required: 2 years of experience in areas of learning support and/or instruction (consideration will be given to two years of undergraduate or graduate work in these same areas)
  • Preferred: Experience in higher education; knowledge of grammar and the conventions of academic writing, prior training/certification in Supplemental Instruction, teaching, coaching, and /or other forms of academic support and program development
  • Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of academic skill and learning development models
  • Knowledge of program and learning outcomes assessment
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to facilitate student learning in individual, small group, and classroom settings
  • Understanding of and appreciation for inclusion, including the ability to work with students, faculty, and staff from diverse backgrounds and identities
