The Manager, Social Media Strategy develops and defines the strategy for Syracuse University’s flagship social media platforms, manages a team of social media strategists to define the scope and recommendations for the platforms, acts as an advisor to partners across the University and leads the University’s development and implementation of social media governance. The Manager will lead their team to create and source content relevant to partner markets; amplify messages and industry news and information through research on trends, educational content and thought leadership. The Manager will be the primary communication point of contact for day-to-day social media team activity and respond to the majority of the team’s daily questions, needs, etc. The Manager will oversee the gathering of data to gain insights and develop action-oriented analysis of measurements from social platforms. The Manager will lead projects and initiatives assigned to the team and proactively interact with online communities across all platforms. The manager will oversee the day-to-day management of the team, including student workers, interns, and student ambassadors. The manager will guide and recommend response plans for mitigating risk and negative backlash to leadership.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in communications, information management, or equivalent degree or professional experience required.

• Minimum of three (3) years’ experience in digital and social media communications and digital marketing.

• Minimum of one (1) year of management experience preferred (project management, people management, and/or intern/student management).

Job Specific Qualifications

• Advanced ability to communicate in writing, strong editing skills, writing and grammar fundamentals.

• Thorough knowledge of social media platforms, best practices, proficiency working across platforms and knowledge of what makes content engaging and sharable for all Syracuse University audiences.

• Understanding of how to leverage social media for brand development and to achieve organizational objectives.

• Knowledge of principles/practices related to storytelling, communications, public relations, marketing, user-generated content management, and reputation management.

• Strong organizational/time management skills, high level of attention to detail, ability to take initiative and problem solve, and to adapt to new and changing technologies.

• Strong creative and critical thinking skills, excellent judgment, and ability to respond quickly and strategically in a variety of situations/environments.

• Existing knowledge of photography, videography, multimedia and/or graphic design is preferred.

• Existing knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite software, Google Analytics, basic HTML, third-party social media tools (i.e. Social Studio, HootSuite, etc.), content management systems and similar technologies is preferred.

• Experience in higher education preferred.

Responsibilities

• Creates and manages the University’s social media strategies by coordinating the daily activity of Syracuse University’s primary social media channels.

• Plans and curates engaging content for multiple audiences in a variety of ways and formats, managing the content review process for the student social media team.

• Supervises the social media team (employees, interns, student ambassadors) who will assist in the implementation of social/digital media strategic goals and activities.

• Develops and implements social media tactics and plans to support events, campaigns, fundraising activities and other communications strategies and initiatives.

• Supports projects and initiatives assigned to support the University’s communications strategies.

• Establish and socialize social media governance and guidelines for the University as it relates to all social platforms.

• Consistently (including after normal business hours) monitors University channels, external channels, and social conversations, and directs issues and opportunities to the proper departments for prompt and appropriate responses, seven days a week.

• Tracks and reports on key performance indicators and benchmarks to measure the effectiveness of social media strategies and efforts.

• Keeps track of trends in the social media landscape.

• Makes recommendations and adjusts strategies based on analytics and insights.

• Stays up-to-date on industry trends.
