Job Summary
The Department of Teacher Education, Leadership, and Counseling in Columbus State University’s College of Education and Health Professions invites applications for a nine-month, tenure track faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor of Literacy Education.
Responsibilities
Responsibilities include: teaching undergraduate and graduate students in pre-service and advanced programs, both online and in person, mentoring graduate students, and working collaboratively with internal and external partners and agencies.This position comes with a Director role for the Reading Instruction, Support, and Education (RISE center). The RISE center’s mission is to encourage socially just reading education practices that recognize children‘s literacy strengths and needs and differentiate instruction accordingly. The center supports teacher education students and faculty by offering resources and equipment to enrich their curricula. Responsibilities also include coordinating the Reading Endorsement Program, designing, implementing, and assessing the Reading Endorsement and the literacy courses in the Elementary Education program (at the undergraduate and graduate levels) with potential for developing a graduate literacy program; supervision of student teachers, interns, and practicum students; engaging in research and scholarly activities, to include mentoring of doctoral students and serving and chairing of doctoral dissertation committees; service to the program, department, college, and university; and participating actively in professional development and leadership activities. The Elementary Education program (P-5) is a vibrant program that is rooted in a constructivist theoretical perspective, includes highly collaborative and innovative faculty, works closely with P-12 partners in Professional Development Schools, and prepares outstanding, highly sought-out teachers. Teacher Education at Columbus State prepares candidates to be student-centered teachers who promote engagement and success for all learners.
The successful candidate will perform service and administrative tasks necessary to enhance program, department, college, and university goals and objectives; perform related tasks necessary to ensure excellence in educator preparation at Columbus State University; and use technology for synchronous and asynchronous instruction. The successful candidate will be able to foster an environment of professionalism and collaboration, work in continuous improvement of educator preparation and educational research, demonstrate exceptional ability to function as part of a team with university faculty and the community of practice, and engage in practices that support the University’s focus on student engagement and active learning.
Required Qualifications
Candidates must have an earned doctorate (ABD considered if degree will be awarded by start of employment) in Literacy Education, Reading, or a related field from a regionally accredited institution (must be able to meet Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) requirements, in particular a minimum of 18 graduate hours in the teaching discipline); evidence of two years’ experience as a literacy teacher, coach, or supervisor in a PK-12 school setting (preferably in a public school setting); excellent written and oral communication skills; excellent interpersonal and collaboration skills; a record of successful research and publication or strong evidence of potential; a demonstrated record of membership and participation in relevant professional organizations; a record of service and involvement in the profession; and the ability to use technology for synchronous and asynchronous instruction.
Preferred Qualifications
Preference will be given to candidates who have a demonstrated ability to coordinate and grow a literacy program; to bring innovative strategies to our teacher education program; have evidence of successful teaching at the college level in both traditional and online environments; have evidence of collaborating with elementary school partners in a Professional Development School setting; and have knowledge/experience with accreditation.
