Position Summary

Assistant Professor of Graphic Design
The Lamar Dodd School of Art at the University of Georgia invites applicants for a position at the Assistant Professor rank with a focus in graphic design/visual communication design. The anticipated start date is August 2021.

The successful candidate will contribute to shaping the future of the program, placing value on design fundamentals while embracing innovative and diverse technologies, ideologies, and methodologies in creative practice and teaching. The faculty member will pursue an active program of research and/or creative practice, teach a 2/2 load of courses, collaborate with design area faculty in curricular and program development, and contribute to service to the School, University, community, and the design profession. Faculty members are expected to support the college’s goals of creating and sustaining a diverse and inclusive learning environment through their scholarship, teaching, mentoring, and professional service.

Additional Requirements

A terminal degree (i.e., MFA, MDes, M.Arch or PhD) in graphic design or a related field is required.

Relevant/Preferred Education, Experience, Licensure, and/or Certification Preferred Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies

Ideal Candidates will show the following:

● Facility with typography and communication design fundamentals
● Evidence of successful mentorship or teaching at the college level and of potential for success in a research institution
● Ability to teach design principles and theories in graphic design courses focused on dynamic media and digital platforms, and a range of design ideation, materials, and methods
● Record of engagement in contemporary design communities or emerging media practices adjacent to design
● Appreciation for the inter-and cross-disciplinary nature of design, valuing collaboration, engaging in design across various media and platforms.
● Familiarity with inclusive pedagogies, issues related to unconscious bias in design, and/or accessible design
● Research and professional practice that addresses issues relevant to promotion of just societies, sustainability, and future methodologies of visual communication
● Research and pedagogical focus in any of the following areas: human-centered or user experience design; mobile and/or emergent technologies; UX/UI design; interactive or motion design; design strategy, research, history, theory, and criticism; service design or community engagement; generative design and data visualization; or speculative technologies such as VR, AR or AI
