About the Opportunity:
The Lead Developer for Design excels in HTML5, PHP (Wordpress in particular), CSS3 and JavaScript. You must be well-versed in U/I and U/X and data visualization and able to bring great designs to life that translate complex information in an engaging way for a wide range of audiences. You must love developing new tools and reusable components in a fast-paced environment. You must be able to take complex information and data and make it relatable with superb functionality.
You'll be joining a curious, innovative and hard-working team of journalists, editors, media relations professionals, and social media producers who love creativity and collaboration. Responsibilities:
The Lead Developer for Design functions as a full stack developer, working in both the front and back ends of the web environment. He/she works with a small team of designers and developers, as well other content creators in a newsroom, to develop new tools for journalists/storytellers to tell traditional, as well as rich media- and data-driven stories, rapidly iterating based on the needs of the newsroom. He/she is a critical member of the digital newsroom, working on projects from conceptualization to implementation, with a special emphasis on development involving PHP, CSS, HTML, JQuery and Javascript, and incorporating U/I and U/X best practices, as well as API. He/she must work well in collaboration with other designers and developers and other content creators under tight deadlines in a fast-paced newsroom environment, and must be excited about storytelling best practices in a digital environment. He/she can work with and visualize data, including creating maps, charts and other interactive functionalities. He/she has a strong grasp on the code base and ensures that organizational code standards are maintained. He/she also keeps current with the latest in web technology, can help modernize the newsroom platform as needed and improve security as appropriate.

The Lead Developer for Design takes on leadership roles in digital team-centric projects and across the newsroom. He/she functions as second in command of the digital team to the Digital Design Director and assumes team lead when the Director is not present. He/she advises and provides feedback for other teammates in various roles, and identifies areas of opportunity for team improvement as well as opportunities for innovation.

Qualifications:
You must have: | Bachelor's degree | 8+ years of experience at the cross-section of design and development, heavy on HTML5, CSS3, PHP, JavaScript | Wordpress theme and plugin development experience | Experience working with a template engine (bonus points for Twig/Timber) | Working knowledge of task runners and bundling/deployment tools (Grunt, Gulp, Webpack, etc.) | Experience with data visualization
Excellent work ethic and a positive attitude / Great sense of humor and the ability to communicate with others, including non-technical people | Respect for code quality and deadlines | Git & GitHub version control | Familiar with accessibility standards and best practices
Experience in a journalism/storytelling-driven environment is a plus. Experience in higher education is neither necessary nor desired.

Great if you also have:
Knowledge of Advanced Custom Fields for Wordpress | Familiarity with server, network, and hosting environments | Experience using APIs, visualizing data, including creating maps, charts and other interactive functionalities (D3, R or other) | Dabbled in Agile, SCRUM | Know UI / UX best practices | Used analytics tools | experience in a newsroom-type environment | experience with management responsibilities

The Lead Developer for Design is based on Northeastern's Boston campus, and is not eligible for remote work. Like all staff members in the Office of Communications, the Lead Developer for Design will occasionally be required to work outside of regular business hours, including weekends.
