Social Justice Teaching Fellow

About Northeastern:
Founded in 1898, Northeastern is a global research university and the recognized leader in experience-driven lifelong learning. Our world-renowned experiential approach empowers our students, faculty, alumni, and partners to create impact far beyond the confines of discipline, degree, and campus.

Our locations—in Boston; Charlotte, North Carolina; London; Portland, Maine; San Francisco; Seattle; Silicon Valley; Toronto; Vancouver; and the Massachusetts communities of Burlington and Nahant—are nodes in our growing global university system. Through this network, we expand opportunities for flexible, student-centered learning and collaborative, solutions-focused research.

Northeastern's comprehensive array of undergraduate and graduate programs— in a variety of on-campus and online formats—lead to degrees through the doctorate in nine colleges and schools. Among these, we offer more than 195 multi-discipline majors and degrees designed to prepare students for purposeful lives and careers.

About the Opportunity:
The Social Justice Teaching Fellow will teach in the Legal Skills in Social Context Program (LSSC). LSSC, the only program of its kind in the country, is the cornerstone of the first-year curriculum at Northeastern. Designed to enhance law students' skills development through social justice lawyering, the course is comprised of two parts: a traditional legal research and writing component and a social justice research project. The benefits of the program for students are numerous: students learn and develop a wide array of essential lawyering skills and have an opportunity to immediately apply their skills and put them to use in support of people in need. Through the Fellowship, the Fellow will have an opportunity not only to teach a new generation of lawyers the skills necessary for effective lawyering but also guide them in examining how the law can enhance social justice.

The law school will provide mentorship and other resources to help Fellows develop their teaching skills. The LSSC Program Administrator and other LSSC faculty members will be available to advise Fellows about their research projects and help match Fellows with faculty mentors. Each Fellow will be provided an annual budget for professional development and research costs, such as attending conferences and trainings and hiring research assistants.

The initial term of appointment is one academic year and will begin in July 2021. Fellows are expected, upon reappointment, to serve a second year. During their second term the Fellow would teach two law offices (a total of 30-32 students). Reappointment for a second-year term will be based on demonstrated excellence in teaching, as well as service to the LSSC program and positive citizenship at the school.

People of color, women, LGBTQ+ candidates and other candidates from groups underrepresented in the legal academy are strongly encouraged to apply.

Responsibilities:
In the first year of the Fellowship, the Social Justice Teaching Fellow will teach the LSSC course to a group of 15-16 first-year students (known as a “law office”) and supervise the students' work on a year-long social justice project with a non-profit organization. Each student receives eight credits for their work in LSSC: four in the Fall and four in the Spring. In the Fall, the Fellow will be expected to teach the fundamental skills of legal analysis, with a particular focus on legal research and objective writing, and to provide substantial written and in-person feedback on the students' work. The Fellow is also expected to guide the students in an exploration of social justice lawyering concepts, including structural racism, the relationship between law and power, the use of narrative and metaphor in the law, the role of the lawyer in social justice movements, and cultural humility. In addition, the Fellow will, with the assistance of an upper-level student, supervise the students in their initial research for their social justice project.

In the Spring, the Fellow will cover a wider range of legal writing concepts, including advisory and persuasive writing, and will conduct oral argument simulations. The Fellow will also assist students in creating a deliverable of publishable quality for the partner organization as well as a multi-media final presentation to the partner organization, the law school community, and interested stakeholders.

Additionally, the Fellow's role may include assisting the LSSC Program Administrator to develop materials and resources for the Program. While scholarship is not a requirement for the Teaching Fellow, the Fellow may choose to explore scholarship opportunities during their Fellowship.

Qualifications:
Applicants must have a J.D., excellent written and oral communications skills, a minimum of two years' legal experience in the US before the start of the fellowship, and a demonstrated commitment to social justice.

Salary Grade:
FAC

Additional Information:
Applicants should submit a formal letter of interest, along with curriculum vitae, a writing sample from law practice (such as an objective memo or persuasive brief), and the names and contact information of three references.

Applications will be reviewed upon receipt and the search will continue until the position is filled. More information regarding this position can be obtained by contacting Professor Carol Mallory at c.mallory@northeastern.edu.
