The Alumni Relations Office plays an important role in providing opportunities for alumni and families to engage in the life of the college in mutually beneficial ways. Reporting to the Director of Alumni Relations, the Associate Director of Alumni Relations plays a critical role in enhancing our efforts to engage meaningfully with alumni, families and students of color. The Associate Director is responsible for enthusiastically supporting and enhancing the diversity, equity and inclusion work of the Alumni Relations team, and the entire Advancement Division, to accomplish engagement and fundraising goals for alumni. The Associate Director will interact with alumni, faculty, staff, campus partners and students to better understand how we can more meaningfully create opportunities for alumni of color to connect with each other and with the College, designing and sustaining initiatives intended to create positive relationships and experiences for constituents in underrepresented populations.
We seek to have our staff reflect the changing demographics of our student body. Our student body is diverse, representing 41 states and 70 countries with 21% students of color and 50% women. Just over 90% of students live in campus residences. Trinity College is a highly selective, independent, nonsectarian liberal arts institution located in Connecticut’s capital, Hartford. With over 2100 full-time undergraduate students and 91 graduate students, the College maintains a rigorous academic profile complemented by a vibrant and diverse co-curricular program. Duties and Responsibilities
- Work with colleagues and alumni of color to ascertain desired forms of engagement with the College
- Establish and re-establish affinity organizations based on race, ethnicity, sexual orientation and first-generation students and alumni intended to bring alumni together with each other and with the College
- Develop relationships with key campus partners in Admissions, Student Success and Career Development, and Student Life to help identify ways in which alumni can play vital roles in their success, particularly in the recruitment and retention of students as well as creating mentoring opportunities
- Become a trusted advisor to students, student leaders, and student organizations to help identify areas of opportunity for beneficial connection with alumni
- Design and execute both virtual and in-person events, on campus and off, to bring alumni together for social and professional networking
- Identify programming opportunities inside of traditional events such as Reunions and Homecoming as well as new opportunities that stand on their own
- Identify and cultivate alumni willing and capable of serving as volunteer leaders for varied organizations and initiatives at the College
- Work with alumni relations and fundraising colleagues to develop engagement strategies for specific alumni of color
- Determine metrics to measure the success of alumni engagement and to benchmark our progress
- Serve as key liaison for Advancement Division in identifying and developing education and awareness opportunities to enhance diversity, equity and inclusion capability of all members of the Division
- Support alumni relations colleagues in major division/department events such as Reunions and Homecoming
- Other duties as assigned
Occasional evening and weekend hours required.
- A bachelor’s degree is required, with three to five years of professional experience, preferably in a college or university setting, and/or a combination of education, training, and experiences providing the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to enhance DEI initiatives
- Demonstrated interest and experience in working with alumni and students, and underrepresented populations
- Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work collaboratively with colleagues in Advancement and across campus
- Excellent organizational skills, with an aptitude for prioritizing multiple tasks while maintaining a high level of accuracy; ability to set priorities, handle multiple complex tasks/projects concurrently and meet deadlines; and a proactive problem solver.
- Strong attention to details. Excellent analytical skills and comfort with data driven planning and outcomes. The ability to express thoughts and ideas clearly in writing and verbally.
- Demonstrated ability in event management including event and meeting planning, both in virtual and in-person settings
- Willingness and ability to travel to regions of the United States where alumni are concentrated
- Ability to communicate with tact and diplomacy; high integrity needed to handle confidential information.
- A proficiency in using Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, and Outlook, Knowledge of donor database software and query tools preferred
- Familiarity with Trinity College as an alumni or former staff member preferred
