POSITION SUMMARY (posted 2/15/2021)

 

The Chairperson of the Department of Aviation Sciences is the chief academic officer of the faculty assigned to the department. As such, the chair plans, organizes, directs, and coordinates the activities of the department in consultation with the department faculty, and the Dean of the College of Aviation. The Chair reports to the Dean of the College of Aviation and works closely with the college’s the Executive Director of Flight Operations, and the Associate Dean of Research.

 

The college seeks an individual who can bring vision and dynamism to the development and delivery of the department programs, advance research and professional practice of the faculty, and work constructively with faculty and others to continuously improve the quality of department and college programs.

 

Responsibilities

The chair is responsible for all aspects of academic planning and operations, including:

  • Administrator to the faculty of the department.
  • Oversight of department academic programming.
  • Functional supervision of the College of Aviation Advising office.
  • Serve as college representative to the Organization of Chairs, Heads, and Directors (OCHAD) Executive Committee.
  • Promoting faculty research through assistance with grant writing, direct and indirect support, and other incentives.
  • Enabling communications between and with students, staff and faculty.
  • Responsible for planning, development, and oversight of the departmental budget.
  • Handling department personnel matters including conducting annual faculty reviews.
  • Developing and enhancing educational partnerships such as community college articulation agreements.
  • Enabling professional and community services using department resources.
  Education
  • An earned master’s degree with aviation industry-related experience (business, education, military) is required.

 

Minimum Professional Experience and Personal Characteristics
  • A distinguished record of performance in teaching in higher education, and professional service, which will establish eligibility for a tenured appointment at the rank of associate/full professor or at the rank of faculty specialist II/master faculty specialist.
  • Demonstrated success in an educational administrative role or evidence of potential to perform administrative roles and functions in an exemplary manner in the academic environment.
  • Demonstrated experience in the assessment process.
  • Demonstrated personal and professional commitment to cultural diversity at all levels of education.
  • Demonstrated ability to conceptualize and implement a vision, which is in harmony with the college's mission and attuned to national trends in the aviation industry to ensure the reputation of quality education in College of Aviation programs.
  • A record of fiscal management abilities through direct budget management and procurement of critical financial resources, including grants, contracts and private support.
  • Evidence of commitment to faculty involvement in departmental self-governance.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop coalitions and partnerships in the university, in business/industry and enhance collaboration in the local community.
  • The ability to serve as a strong advocate for the department and College to both internal and external constituents.
  • Demonstrated experience with program assessment and evaluation.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills.

 

Additional Desired Qualifications

  • A distinguished record of performance in research is preferred.
  • Earned doctorate from an accredited institution.
  • Teaching experience.
  • FAA flight, maintenance, and/or dispatcher certification.

 

Overall, the successful candidate will be a dynamic, energetic educational leader who can facilitate and motivate diverse internal and external groups to the benefit of the College of Aviation within the broader context of the University. Compensation is commensurate with background and experience.  The position is a continuing appointment, subject to annual reviews.
