The Department of Oncology, Central Kit Services is seeking aLaboratory Technicianto be responsiblefor various tasks including preparing kits; delivering prepared kits to the Research Phlebotomy department, the Central Processing Core (CPC) and other locations; receiving shipments and logging kits/supplies into inventory; assisting with inventory management.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Prepares sample collection kits and completes requisition forms for subject visits
  • Understands and uses the electronic inventory/barcode system to log received kits and supplies
  • Helps organize and maintain the kit inventory, including breaking down expired kits
  • Transports kits to Research Phlebotomy, Central Processing Core and other locations
  • Picks up kits or materials from other departments for transport to the Central Kit facility
  • Other duties as assigned by the Operations Director.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

High School Diploma or GED with some science coursework.

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE

    Training certificate or some college coursework
  • Some related work or internship experience preferred

ADDITIONAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES/COMPETENCIES

  • Good oral and written communication skills.
  • Attentive to detail; able to discriminate between multiple similar tubes/vials.
  • Legible handwriting, including the ability to write neatly on small labels.
  • Able to read small print on tube/vial labels.
  • Reliability in attendance, punctual; foresight in planning time off in cooperation with other team members.
  • Ability to bend, stoop, lift boxes weighing up to 25 lbs and walk moderate distances while pushing a cart.
  • Comfortable using a step stool and reaching above shoulder height

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Sitting, standing and walking for extended period. Reaching by extending hand(s) or arm(s) in any direction. Finger dexterity required to manipulate objects with fingers rather than with whole hand(s) or arm(s). Ability to move standard equipment through a hospital or laboratory/clinical environment.

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
