General Summary/Purpose:

Emerging Infections Program/Active Bacterial Core Surveillance (ABCs) surveillance program conducted in conjunction with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DHMH).

Specific Duties and Responsibilities

  • Under the supervision of the Project Manager at JHSPH, responsibilities will include interacting with state and local laboratories to identify and record cases of infectious disease, travel to select hospitals to perform laboratory audits and to pick-up and ship isolates, and enter and maintain data in the study Access Databases.
  • Will interact with personnel at DHMH, CDC and the University of Pittsburgh for data reporting, respond to information requests, and troubleshoot and update study databases when needed.
  • Will routinely interact with study partners at Maryland hospitals and laboratories, the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the University of Pittsburgh via telephone, e-mail and fax, requiring the ability to effectively collect, record and communicate study information.
  • Interact daily with MDH Epidemiologists for identification and recording of new cases.
  • Work closely with MDH for COVID 19 mitigation procedures including conducting interviews of COVID 19 positive health care workers; reporting and recording interview findings in COVID 19 state databases; investigating crossover of COVID positive/ABCs pathogen positive cases for identification of cases with co-infection; entering co-infection information into ABCs surveillance databases.
  • Provide technical support for installation and implementation of new candidemia surveillance database.
  • Identify and provide to MDH case isolates for shipment to CDC; oversee and trach shipments of surveillance isolates and maintain isolate and isolate shipment logs.
  • Participate in weekly COVID 19 meetings with MDH and CDC and present updates.
  • Responsible for setting up ongoing study Zoom and Team calls and preparing call minutes.
  • Will assist with conducting study interviews, ordering study supplies, and other project activities as needed.
  • Responsible for installing and maintaining functionality of software for staff remote access to study databases and files.
  • Approximately 20% of this position is spent away from the office traveling to labs for isolate pick-up and shipment and performing lab audits. Travel to hospital labs within the Baltimore/Washington area is required.
  • Perform miscellaneous related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications (mandatory):

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related discipline.
  • Some related experience, preferably in a medical related field, medical technology, and/or working in a clinical laboratory.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in a related discipline.
  • Familiarity and competency in Access and SAS certified.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology.

Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office products including Word, PowerPoint and Excel.
  • Must be highly organized, able to identify and accurately record data, and able to simultaneously maintain and prioritize several ongoing project activities.
  • Must be detail oriented, maintain meticulous records and be able to maintain patient confidentiality.
  • Must have personal reliable transportation.
  • Must complete Human Subjects Research Ethics training and bio-specimen shipment training.

This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
