Position Summary:

Discovery to Product (D2P) is a unit within the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research and Graduate Education with a mission to empower campus innovators to realize the Wisconsin Idea by transforming ideas and technologies into products and services that change the world. D2P provides mentoring, entrepreneurial education, and grant funding to campus innovators, supported by a team of Innovation and Commercialization specialists who are veteran business developers, entrepreneurs, product managers, and start-up executives.

D2P works with a wide range of projects, from social innovations and consumer product solutions to medical devices and artificial intelligence technologies. D2P also works with a wide range of campus innovators, from faculty and researchers to staff, undergraduate and graduate students, and is committed to increasing the participation and success of underrepresented innovators through proactive diversity and inclusion strategies. In addition to its own programming, D2P administers the Innovate Network website, which serves as centralized resource for campus innovators.The Innovate website features news, events, and resources from a wide range of university and campus affiliate programs actively supporting innovation, commercialization, tech transfer, and campus entrepreneurship. With partners in the Innovate Network, D2P is working to develop a culture of entrepreneurship on campus and support the growth of the regional entrepreneurial ecosystem.

Currently, D2P has six technology focus areas: Engineering and Physical Sciences, Agriculture, Medical Devices, Computer and Information Technology, Food and Nutritional Science and Biotech-Pharmacology. This Innovation and Commercialization Specialist (ICS) is required to be a subject matter expert with commercial experience in engineering and physical sciences. Under the general supervision of the Director of D2P, the ICS works independently, and is responsible for working closely with the Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation (WARF) and providing a broad range of services and information to campus and off-campus stakeholders and clients.

The successful candidate must have the ability and mindset to work with campus leaders, affiliated organizations, community and government partners, innovators, and technical project teams and provide meaningful input and guidance to those constituencies. This position requires a blend of technical expertise in engineering or a physical science with experience in company formation and commercialization in that same discipline. Good judgment, excellent problem solving and communication skills are required as well as strong facilitation, consultation and convening skills and experience. Training experience is a plus. This position must have an understanding and appreciation of higher education.

Degree and Area of Specialization:

A Bachelor 's degree is required. Master's degree, MBA, J.D. or Ph.D is preferred.

Minimum Years and Type of Relevant Work Experience:

Minimum 7 years relevant work experience required
-Technical knowledge of the innovation and business creation process, landscape, and market for technology in a discipline related to engineering (Biomedical, Chemical, Computer, Electrical, Industrial, Materials, Mechanical), or physical sciences (Chemistry, applied Physics, Earth Sciences) required
-Experience with firms and projects closely related to engineering, engineering design, manufacturing, water energy, materials science, or clean technology
-Startup or early stage company experience
-Knowledge and experience with the technology licensing process, details and realities of start-up formation and raising of equity capital
-Ability to work and communicate with a technical project team and to contribute to the management of the project toward commercialization
-History of excellent executive and management skills that are translatable to practical lessons and advice for innovators and entrepreneurs
-Ability to inspire, communicate, and collaborate with a broad range of diverse University and non-University stakeholders including university leaders, faculty, staff, students, affiliated organizations, community and industry partners, and governmental leaders
-Skilled at managing multiple, concurrent projects, meeting deadlines, and attention to detail required
-Strong interpersonal and relationship management skills required. Must collaborate effectively by: contributing positively to the success of the project team; treating others with respect, courtesy and professionalism; being open to feedback; and able to effectively confront and resolve conflict and establish trust and mutual respect
-Ability to work independently as well as function effectively in a team and within a diverse group of people
-Experience and expertise with understanding complex technical issues and conveying them clearly in technical and business formats to various audiences
-Experience as a facilitator, instructor or trainer
