Project Summary
Bard High School Early College (BHSEC) Queens is committed to increasing high school graduation and postsecondary degree completion rates for historically underrepresented and/or economically disadvantaged students. This summer, we are hosting a virtual summer program for 45 of our incoming ninth-grade students. The Bard DNA (Diverse Network of Action) Summer Program is designed to support students from historically underrepresented and/or economically disadvantaged backgrounds in their academic and social transition from NYC middle schools to BHSEC Queens. The program will promote growth in social and emotional connections to BHSEC Queens and develop familiarity with academic skills that will be important to incoming ninth graders in the year ahead.

Opportunity
BHSEC Queens is seeking faculty members to teach in our Bard DNA virtual summer program. The faculty members will teach a three-week course in their area of expertise and will work closely with the Bard DNA Director, Program Coordinator, and student staff. Faculty members will immerse students in engaging coursework and connect with students to discuss strategies for academic growth and advancement.
Orientation and Training for all Summer Faculty and Student Staff will be held from Tuesday, July 6th - Thursday, July 8th. The Summer Program will run from July 12 – July 30th, Monday - Friday, 11 am - 3:30 pm (subject to change). Summer Faculty will be compensated with a $2,000 stipend.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:
  • Develop an academic curriculum for the three-week program that builds academic skills and reinforces important concepts essential for success in 9th grade.
  • Attend the Faculty and Peer Mentor Orientation and Training that will be held from July 6th - July 8th
  • Host office hours each week of the three week program
  • Attend weekly faculty and all-staff check in meetings after school
  • Maintain communication with parents, informing them of student concerns in a timely manne
  • Integrate support from Peer Mentors during class, and office hours if applicable
Qualifications
Preference is given to Candidates with the Following Qualifications:
  • Currently teaching in the Bard High School Early College Network
  • Teachers whose proposed course addresses Identity--Race/ethnicity, gender/sexuality, socioeconomic status, etc.--in their curriculum
  • Prior experience working with historically underrepresented students in higher education
  • Special Education Teaching experience with specialization in math or literature

In your cover letter, please discuss your interest in this position, experience working with historically underrepresented students; and explain how your expertise, training, and pedagogical approach has prepared you to teach and support students who have been historically underrepresented in higher education. You should also submit a course proposal.
