Statistics or Mathematics Contract Faculty

The Division of Mathematics, Computing, and Statistics (MCS) at Simmons University is seeking applicants for a contract (non-tenure-track) faculty position in Statistics or Mathematics, to begin July 1, 2021 (start date negotiable). MCS houses majors in Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science, and Data Science, as well as several other interdisciplinary majors. Approximately three quarters of all undergraduates at Simmons take at least one course in statistics, all of which are taught by MCS. The Division is housed within the College of Organizational, Computational, and Information Sciences, which also includes the School of Business and the School of Library and Information Science. This unique organizational structure facilitates the exploration of interdisciplinary programs and scholarship that move beyond traditional disciplinary approaches to address broad questions of how data, information, and knowledge affect the human endeavor and how people work and live together in the 21st century. One key priority is to clearly articulate how science can be used for good and to promote equity. This includes the explicit integration of diverse perspectives, problem sets, and experiments reflecting today's most challenging social and scientific problems. The College envisions a professoriate with the boldness to implement a University-wide equity agenda.

Responsibilities: Responsibilities include teaching a wide range of courses in statistics and/or mathematics through the calculus sequence and being an active participant in service within the Division and the University. Service responsibilities include but are not limited to: advising Division majors, supporting the growing Statistics and Data Science programs, contributing to online undergraduate degree programs, and being an active member of select Division and University committees. We seek an innovative educator with demonstrated excellence in undergraduate teaching and mentoring, creative curriculum development, and a commitment to interdisciplinary collaboration inside and outside the University.

Qualifications: We are open to individuals interested in, and qualified for, either of the following 10-month, non-tenure-track faculty positions. Please note that we are filling only one position at this time. Candidates must have earned a graduate degree in Statistics or Mathematics, or a related field (or expect to earn such a degree by Fall 2021).

Non-Tenure Track (NTT) Lecturer or Assistant Professor: NTT appointments are teaching-focused positions that do not carry research expectations. NTT faculty carry a teaching load of seven courses a year (or the equivalent) and must participate in service activities. Candidates will have strong teaching experience, with demonstrated excellence and innovation in teaching. Candidates for an Assistant Professor (NTT) position must have earned a doctoral degree by the time of the appointment.

Assistant, Associate, or full Professor of Practice: Candidates will have an M.S. in a relevant field, and substantial industry experience as a statistics/data science professional (five years or more). Appointments may be made at the Assistant, Associate, or full Professor of Practice rank, depending on experience. Professors of Practice carry a teaching load of seven courses a year (or the equivalent), and must maintain currency in the field through consulting or active engagement with the professional community, as well as participating in campus service activities. Candidates will have demonstrated teaching experience or strong potential to excel at teaching and have at least five years of professional experience.

Salary and Benefits: Salary is commensurate with experience and qualifications. Simmons University participates in TIAA/CREF and offers excellent benefits packages, including tuition reimbursement for dependents at Simmons and other institutions.
