About the Opportunity:
The Assistant Director for Space Planning & Safety will be a key member of the College of Science (COS) Dean's Office team focusing on the creative, safe, and sustainable use of space and equipment for college operations.

Reporting to the Associate Dean of Administration and Finance, the Assistant Director for Space Planning & Safety will be charged with understanding the unique and dynamic space and equipment needs of COS and helping manage the resources required for the acquisition, upkeep, renovations, and safe operations of that space and equipment.

Responsibilities:
The Assistant Director will be the primary liaison between COS and key university partner offices including Facilities, Campus Planning, Environmental Health & Safety and the Core Oversight Committee. The Assistant Director will also be expected to provide insight and analysis into COS space and equipment usage and needs, monitor and oversee renovation projects, and act as the leading lab safety and emergency protocols resource within COS, including remaining up to date on relevant safety protocols and ensuring those are properly disseminated within the College. In the absence of the Safety Officer, the Assistant Director will be required fulfil the critical life safety duties of the Safety Officer.

Qualifications:
Master's degree in scientific discipline, related engineering discipline, related safety field or planning /project management required. A minimum of 5-7 years' experience in laboratory environments and/or similar applied research experience required. Strong familiarity with health and safety protocols for lab environments required.

Further, a successful candidate will have strong communication skills and an understanding of a higher education environment, experience being diplomatic and direct as needed, and interest in working in a fast-paced environment while managing a varied workload. Demonstrates ability to mobilize resources necessary to complete projects.


Preferred Qualifications:

Safety training in OSHA, EPA, NIH, HAZWOPER strongly recommended.
