The Vice President for Learning and Student Success provides
overall leadership and vision for instructional and student
services programs, activities, and support functions to advance the
institution's mission, with intentional focus on building an
anti-racist institution. Working collaboratively with their
counterpart at Pierce College Puyallup, the Vice President
exercises sound judgment and provides leadership in: leading
strategic planning, development, implementation, and assessment of
instructional programs and student success programs; engaging as a
collaborative team member on the Pierce College District Executive
Team; building the college budgets; making sound fiduciary
decisions; and participating in Pierce College Board of Trustees
meetings. The Vice President for Learning and Student Success
cooperatively leads a team of instructional and student service
leaders in creating and implementing equitable, innovative, and
meaningful learning experiences for students.
This position reports to the President at Pierce College Fort Steilacoom and interacts with students, faculty, and staff of the college, public and state agencies, and the general public. This position interacts closely with the Vice President for Learning and Student Success at Pierce College Puyallup, the Vice President for Workforce, Economic, and Professional Development, the Vice President for Equity, Innovation, and Engagement, and the District Executive Team (E-Team). The Vice President shares leadership duties with Puyallup VPLSS for Instructional and Student Success Deans, Student Services Directors, Shared Governance Councils, and other staff supporting the unit.
The Vice President is responsible for:
Providing innovative leadership and direction: Within a guided pathways framework, provide innovative and equity-centered leadership and direction in the following areas: Strategic planning, development, implementation, and assessment of instructional curriculum and programs and student success programs including faculty evaluation, enrollment management, and retention strategies. Engages in projects, task forces, and committees as assigned by the President. Using evidence-based decision-making, implement initiatives that lead to equitable student success and engagement.
The Vice President is responsible for directly supervising the instructional and student success deans, as well as other support staff. This individual will engage as a collaborative team member on the Pierce College District Executive Team and participates in Pierce College Board of Trustees meetings and shares leadership responsibilities for Shared Governance Councils and committees.
College Governance: Providing input into district level vision, policies, and procedures as an active member of the district executive team. Functions as a collaborative leader/member of shared governance system.
Developing Budgets: Coordinating development of, and monitoring compliance with, budgets for all areas of responsibilities, and working within the executive team to make district budget decisions.
Representing the College: Representing the college on community, state, regional, and national commissions and committees as appropriate.
- Master’s degree from a regionally accredited institution. Doctorate desired.
- Five (5) years of progressive leadership responsibilities in higher education.

- Knowledge of and ability to design ongoing assessment and evaluation processes and provide leadership for instructional and student services efforts associated with accountability, outcomes assessment, continuous improvement, resource management, and accreditation.

Terms of Employment:
This is a 12-month, full-time (40 hours per week) administrative-exempt position with Pierce College District. The primary work location will be at Pierce College Fort Steilacoom campus but frequent travel to Pierce College campuses or sites may occur. Work hours are between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday with occasional evenings and weekends as required. This position may be subject to reassignment between campuses or sites. The anticipated start date is July 1, 2021.
Salary and Benefits:
Salary is commensurate with education and experience. Your paycheck is just part of the total compensation package. There is an outstanding benefits package which is worth an additional value equivalent to about 30% of your salary. This position works indoors in an office environment. During this time, core staff approved by their supervisors to come onto campus are covered by a safety plan that follows social distancing and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) protocols. This includes minimizing close contact by limiting time on campus; conducting meetings virtually; and implementing other creative strategies to reduce the density of employees on campus to keep everyone safe.
