Biology Department

 The University of Arkansas at Little Rock, a Doctoral/Research University by Carnegie Classification, invites applications for the position Biology Department Chairperson (R0002327) at the rank of Associate or Full Professor to begin August 2021. We seek a candidate who will lead one of the largest departments in the Donaghey College of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics and understand the complexities of a modern metropolitan university with a diverse student population. This position is governed by state and federal laws, and agency/institution policy.

 Our location in the state’s capital city gives students immediate access to commercial and government entities with research and internship opportunities, and cooperative education that provides unique learning experiences. The world-class medical facilities of the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences campus, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's National Center for Toxicological Research, the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission, the Arkansas Department of Health, the Arkansas Department of Environmental Quality, the Arkansas Natural Heritage Commission, and the Dale Bumpers National Rice Research Center are within a short distance of campus. Our central location in the state ensures easy access to each of the six distinct physiographic areas of the state.

 The Department of Biology offers four undergraduate and two MS tracks, and a PhD degree in association with the Applied Science Program. The Department has 12 full-time faculty members, three full-time instructors, two part-time instructors, 17 graduate assistantships, over 360 undergraduate majors, and about 30 graduate students. Faculty in the Department possess broad research strengths in Plant Biotechnology, Molecular and Cellular Biology, Computational Biology, Environmental Health Science, and Ecology and Organismal Biology. The Department has strong associations with other STEM departments on campus and with other universities and research facilities throughout the state.

 Required Education and/or Experience: PhD in one of the disciplinary fields of biology; A tenured full professor or associate professor with at least three years in rank; Previous administrative experience in higher education. 

 Preferred Experience: Previous leadership experience in higher education; Experience developing strategies for faculty mentoring and support; Record of excellence and innovation in teaching, and experience with curriculum and program development; Management of budgets and research grants, and knowledge of various funding opportunities; Experience in promoting diversity and inclusion by recruiting, retaining, and graduating underrepresented students; Demonstrated ability to understand and balance the needs of distinct programs within a multidisciplinary department; Demonstrated ability to implement and oversee an effective departmental governance structure.
