The Department of Psychiatry, Behavioral Sciences is seeking aNurse Practitioner, to work in accordance with established policies, evaluates patients in the Adult and Young Adult Affective Disorders Consultation Clinics.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

Patient Care

  • Perform comprehensive psychiatric assessments of patients presenting to the Adult and Young Adult Affective Disorders Consultation Clinics.
  • Review medical records (treatment summaries, labs, and imaging) to assess eligibility for the consultation clinic.
  • Provide evidence-based care based on the process, policies, procedures, and protocols of the Johns Hopkins Hospital.
  • Work collaboratively with other care providers in the consultation clinics.
  • Coordinating consultations and triage
  • Provide direct clinical care for patients presenting for second opinion diagnostic assessment and/or treatment recommendations.
  • Complete appropriate clinical documentation. This includes same-day documentation of the consultation findings and recommendations, and coordination of dissemination of the consultation report to the referring clinician.
  • Maintain resource network for the purpose of referrals to those seeking new providers.
  • Provide patient education in all aspects of affective illness, including how to cope with mental health issues while away from home at college or how to monitor for early signs of recurrence.
  • Assess necessity for higher level of care, such as inpatient hospitalization, and provide steps for planning for inpatient admission if the consultation leads to recommendation for inpatient care.
  • Participate in relevant training, clinical supervision, conferences, and multidisciplinary patient care.
  • Perform miscellaneous related duties as assigned.

Clinical Research

  • Perform structured clinical research interviews and appropriate documentation of research visits.
  • Review medical records (treatment summaries, labs, and imaging) to assess eligibility for the consultation clinic.
  • Perform written informed consent procedures with research volunteers.
  • Assess eligibility for research protocols.

Minimum Qualifications

Master's degree in nursing. Registered Nurse licensed and certified as a Nurse Practitioner. Must be licensed as NP in State of Maryland or other state where practicing. Additional related experience may substitute for master’s degree. Current CPR certification required. Must maintain current licensure and certification during duration of employment. Completion of the JHH credentialing process is required prior to start date.

JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis.

Preferred Qualifications

Master’s degree from an accredited school of nursing. 3-5 years direct patient care experience. Extensive experience and knowledge in psychiatric and substance abuse disorders. Proficient knowledge about chronic pain disorders.

  • Ability to work independently.
  • Ability to interact with faculty and staff on research teams, in clinical programs, and with educational outreach initiative to strategize about their communication needs.
  • Attention to detail a must. Good proofreading skills.
  • Excellent oral communication skills to deal effectively within and outside the department.
  • Excellent written communications skills in a variety of forms, print material, website content, speeches, and publicity materials.
  • Knowledge of and aptitude for graphic design and typography.
  • Skilled in computer programs such as Microsoft Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, Excel and Publisher.
  • Enthusiasm and willingness to learn about the work of the department as well to acquire new technical skills as needed.
  • Excellent organizational skills to work effectively in an environment that requires balancing multiple assignments.
  • Ability to interact effectively with individuals at all levels and from diverse cultures.

Physical Requirements

Sitting, standing and walking for extended period. Reaching by extending hand(s) or arm(s) in any direction. Finger dexterity required to manipulate objects with fingers rather than with whole hand(s) or arm(s). Ability to move standard equipment through a hospital or clinical environment.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
