The Department of Oncology, Community Programs is seeking aCommunity Outreach Engagement Liaison.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assist with implementation with education and outreach activities to the populations of Maryland and the District of Columbia.
  • Drafts translations of print materials, including study and educational materials, into language understandable to non-medical populations.
  • Helps to conducts educational sessions to teach members of the community the basics of cancer prevention and control.
  • Collaborates with community-based organizations to convene advisory groups to review educational materials and activities, identify opportunities to conduct outreach and education activities to ethnic and racial minorities and the general public
  • Disseminates health and cancer education materials to public, health care providers, and community organizations/partners
  • Helps in identification of evidence-based strategies and promising practices to promote cancer prevention, screening, and early detection and disseminates them to community organizations and partners.
  • Works closely with staff of the center to plan, implement, and evaluate community outreach and education activities.
  • Conducts outreach and recruitment activities to recruit potential study participants.
  • Helps to determine eligibility and conducts detailed phone and/or face-to-face interviews in the field.
  • Complies with study protocols and confidentiality requirements.
  • Assists with all aspects of study implementation including assembling study materials, entering and tracking data, and tracking participant reimbursements.

Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

High School Diploma or GED required. Requires a minimum of two years of related experience. Additional education may substitute for experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum experience required for the respective job.

Preferred:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or AA in science related field.
  • Basic knowledge of the principles of health behaviors, cancer and health disparities, community outreach and education, and cancer/health disparities.
  • Bilingual in English and Spanishis a plus

ADDITIONAL, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, OR ABILITIES/COMPETENCIES:

  • Ability to adapt instructional skills for members with learning impairment and low literacy skills.
  • Ability to conduct phone and/or face-to-face interviews and administer interviews in a non-judgmental manner.
  • Ability to engage community based organizations to organize, plan and conduct educational and outreach activities.
  • Ability to demonstrate the skills for planning, developing, and implementing health education and outreach activities.
  • Excellent writing and oral communication skills to develop and deliver culturally competent health education materials and programs.
  • Must have good organizational skills and be able to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to use Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, Internet, type and enter data, and conduct phone and face-to-face interviews.
  • Ability to interact and communicate with members from diverse backgrounds in a culturally appropriate manner
  • Ability to organize and manage multiple competing priorities and to meet deadlines.
  • Be organized, an active listener and detail-oriented.
  • Proficiency in the use of software applications, databases, spreadsheets, and word processing required.
  • Excellent attention to detail skills required.
  • Must have excellent time management skill.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects at once, and effectively prioritize each.
  • Requires outstanding verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Must adhere to guidelines regarding honest reporting of sensitive and confidential patient information.
  • Understands the importance/impact of data integrity in terms of patients, study results, costs, quality of service and scientific research in general.
  • Regular contact with physicians, other health care personnel and occasionally, patients, requires the use of good judgment, tact and sensitivity.
  • Excellent operating knowledge of all Cancer Center clinical equipment and clinical computer systems.
  • Ability to anticipate daily changes in schedule, maintaining a smooth patient flow.
  • Ability to operate computer, telephone, scanner, projector, fax

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Must have reliable transportation to travel to interview and outreach/education sites (mileage reimbursement using the rates of Johns Hopkins). On occasion, some overnight travel may be required.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
