General Summary/Purpose:

After entry-level training under the general supervision of a faculty investigator or laboratory supervisor, the Research Technologist is responsible for performing both routine assays and experimental techniques in the study of sex and gender determinants of HIV infection and the immune response. Additional responsibilities will include contributing to general maintenance of the laboratory, equipment, and supplies.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

Follows established procedures or protocols and utilizes aseptic technique to perform experiments associated with molecular biology, immunology, serology and/or virology. These may include:

  • Perform biology assays to explore mechanisms influencing viral outcome; Nucleic acid extractions and purifications, gel electrophoresis, real-time PCR, tissue culture, western blotting, sequencing, etc.
  • Rigorous documentation of experimental planning, experimental methods, and experimental results updated on a daily basis. Responsible for operation of lab computers for data entry. Maintain accurate data records and laboratory notebook.
  • Monitoring and maintaining a large inventory of blood products, cell lines and nucleic acid samples. Requires excellent attention to detail and organizational skills. Maintains accurate data records.
  • Operate basic laboratory equipment such as centrifuge, pH meter, analytical balance, spectrophotometer, light microscope, plate washer and/or utilize biological safety cabinet. This person may also utilize sophisticated instrumentation such as flow cytometer, luminometer, thermal cycler, Lightcycler, etc.
  • Maintains and makes necessary adjustments to equipment, e.g. calibrating, alignment. Prepares solutions, reagents, and stains following standard laboratory formulas and procedures.
  • Monitors inventory levels, orders materials and supplies in accordance with established policies and procedures, counts orders upon receipt.
  • Additional responsibilities related to the daily laboratory operations will be assigned as needed.


Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in biology, chemistry, or related field required.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Some related undergraduate work experience preferred but not required.
  • Basic Microsoft Office experience helpful

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
