General Summary/Purpose

The Research Technologist will assist in human and mouse specimen management, mouse colony management and experiments, processing of human tissues/blood and experiments with human tissues as well as in general laboratory maintenance.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

This description is a general statement of required duties and responsibilities performed on a regular and continuous basis. It does not exclude other duties as assigned.

Follow established procedures or protocols and utilize aseptic technique to perform laboratory tests and/or experiments which may include: tissue culture, molecular biology, microbiology, immunologic analyses and/or other specialized histology and biological science techniques.

Experiments may use mouse or human tissues or samples.

Coordinate and maintain records of mouse breeding and experiments. Collect mouse samples (such as stool and tail snips) for analysis. Actively participate in animal experiments including culturing stool bacteria. Infect animals through the oral route using designated equipment. Assist in germ-free mouse care and experimental work as needed. May need to administer antibiotics or other anti-infective to animals using specially prepared antibiotic water or oral gavage.

Acquisition and processing human blood to store serum, aliquoting stool, urine and/or oral swish specimens for storage, and storing or processing human colon tissues for molecular or immunologic analyses, microbiology, microscopy and histopathology examinations.

Maintain accurate, rigorous logs of experimental procedures, samples, sample use, site of storage.

Enter data into database(s)as directed.

Collect, organize and analyze experimental data. Prepare data summaries and reports as requested. Monitor inventory levels and proper storage of materials and supplies.

Assist in the cultivation of pathogenic bacteria such as Bacteroides fragilis strains.

Will handle bio-hazardous material under Biosafety Level 2 conditions.

Interact with faculty, lab and administrative staff, students, postdoctoral fellows, and outside vendors.

Meet weekly with designated laboratory staff to review recent data, troubleshoot current experiments, review new experimental protocols and prioritize new experiments.

Demonstrate organization, curiosity, problem solving, resourcefulness, and flexibility. Time flexibility for working hours required to process human specimens and work with germ-free mice.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Chemistry or related field required.

Preferred Qualifications

Prior laboratory experience and mouse experience desirable. Knowledge of Word and Excel.

This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
