Position Summary:

The Research Specialist will be a member of Dr. Randy Brown's PROTEA research team. The applicant will be working directly with study team members and research subjects. Current projects include human subjects research involving patients with diagnoses such as opioid use disorder, major depressive disorder, and post-traumatic stress disorder. Projects include both industry-sponsored clinical trials and Investigator-initiated trials. Some projects may involve the use of novel, investigational treatments. The Research Specialist will primarily be responsible for scheduling and conducting study visits, data collection, and follow up with study participants.

Develops, designs, and conducts one or more research projects and organizes daily operation of projects and specialized research areas to ensure work meets established objectives under moderate supervision. Will be in close communication with research participant, grant sponsors, and staff of the PROTEA team to ensure correct implementation of study protocol.

Degree and Area of Specialization:

Bachelor's Degree required. Degree in Biology, Psychology, Social Work or Sociology is preferred.

Minimum Years and Type of Relevant Work Experience:

-Minimum one year experience in human subjects, health services, and/or clinical trials is required. Preferably with an understanding of mental health/substance disorders or related focus.
- Experience with data entry and use of data bases preferred.
- Knowledge base relevant to mental health, addictions, and health services research preferred.
- Knowledge of research confidentiality/privacy issues preferred.
- Current knowledge/experience of UW regulations and procedures preferred.

The ideal candidate will also have:
- Experience with and demonstrated ability to read, understand, and follow a strict and specific scientific protocol.
- Strong knowledge of computer fundamentals, including Word programs.
- Experience with excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills with research participants and team member.
- Ability to adapt to different work environments (office, clinic, hospital).
- Ability to effectively work independently while collaborating with team members while following team and research protocol and procedures.
- Ability to work independently in virtual formats.

The ideal candidate must be self-motivated and goal-orientated with excellent organizational skills. They must also have excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work as part of a team. In addition, must demonstrate a strong ability to manage multiple projects at any given time is essential.

Prefix assignment determined by years of relevant work experience. A minimum of 7 years' experience is required for appointment at the senior level.

Additional Information:

- Flexibility and willingness to work early mornings, evenings or weekends as needed.
- Must be able to travel to clinical sites in the Madison area and throughout the state of Wisconsin. Must provide own transportation or provide a valid driver's license and a clean driving record (if fleet car usage is requested).

The successful applicant will be responsible for ensuring eligibility for employment in the United States on or before the effective date of the appointment. The Department of Family Medicine and Community Health does not sponsor work visas. Any appointment made will be contingent on the applicant being able to prove valid work status to work in the United States.

This position has been identified as a position of trust with access to vulnerable populations. The selected candidate will be required to pass an initial Caregiver Check to be eligible for employment under the Wisconsin Caregiver Law and then every four years.

Effective January 1, 2020, the U.S. Department of Labor Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) will be updated to require that positions earning less than $35,568 annually be considered non-exempt under FLSA provisions for overtime (see https://www.dol.gov/whd/overtime2019/ ). Based on these rules, if the person selected for this recruitment will earn less than the new salary threshold at January 1, 2020 ($35,568 annually), he/she will be an academic staff non-exempt employee, will be paid hourly, and will receive overtime compensation for any hours worked over 40 in a workweek.

This position will be 75%-100% FTE.
