Position Primary Purpose and General Responsibilities

Driven by a commitment to diversity, inclusion and cultural equity, the ICA at VCU is dedicated to producing and sharing new art and ideas, and to supporting creative communities. The ICA’s program includes artist commissions, exhibitions, film screenings, talks and discussions, publications and performances. It features artists and thinkers from around the world.

The ICA is in direct dialogue with VCUarts, the #1 public art school in the country, and is a space for multi-disciplinary experimentation across a major, urban public research university while simultaneously providing opportunities for creative collaboration locally and internationally.

Designed by the renowned Steven Holl Architects, the ICA’s 41,000 square foot building opened to the public in April 2018, and welcomed over 100,000 visits in its first year.

Reporting to the ICA’s Chief Preparator, the Lead Preparator is a critical member of a collaborative team charged with producing the ICA’s ambitious exhibition program within the allotted budget, space and time. The Preparator is responsible for technical aspects of museum-quality art handling including receiving, shipping, packing, framing, mounting and storage, and participates in exhibition planning, working to ensure the smooth operation of installations and management during the run of an exhibition. In addition to their work in exhibitions, the Lead Preparator also assists their supervisor with the facilities and programmatic operations at the ICA, including after hours and weekend events and programs.

Primary Responsibilities include:

• Work with the Chief Preparator on Production and Fabrication of Artworks in collaboration with artists.
•A/V management and installation
• Provide day-to-day in gallery supervision of part-time preparation staff during installation
• Working with the Chief Preparator, prepare and fabricate exhibition furniture, platforms, displays, and other required elements
• Assist with the lighting of artwork and Gallery spaces
• Painting galleries and exhibition furniture
Fabricate hanging and mounting systems for works of art
• Perform daily walk-throughs and maintenance of exhibition spaces
• Complete incoming and outgoing condition assessments, and create and file condition reports and unpacking/repacking documentation
•Receive and oversee packing and unpacking of art shipments of art and other exhibition related materials
• Occasionally, act as a courier for ICA traveling exhibitions
• Support coordination of transportation of artwork to and from the ICA
• With support from exhibitions staff, ensure loan forms and other exhibition documents are completed, filed, and information is appropriately distributed
• Create and maintain exhibition documents, files, and databases to facilitate packing, unpacking, storage, and shipping
• Maintain artwork storage, create and develop systems to ensure artworks are properly stored, labeled
• Purchasing and Processing for exhibitions
• Provide daily operational support for the exhibitions department
• Provide scheduling for on-call preparator corp and workflow support
• Provide support to maintain art preparation spaces
• Perform related duties as assigned

Minimum Hiring Standards

The ideal candidate will meet the following minimum requirements:
- At least 3-5 years of relevant experience
- Demonstrated ability to learn modeling and drafting software
- Demonstrated art handling experience
- Experience with and understanding of best museum practices in art handling and installation
- Ability to work in a fast paced environment, and implement creative problem-solving skills
- Ability to work in a diverse environment and with a diverse range of colleagues, stakeholders, and visitors is required
- Strong interpersonal skills, and demonstrated ability to maintain composure under pressure
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Basic computer office skills-Excel, Word, Gmail and Google Calendar/Drive

Preferred Hiring Standards

The ideal candidate will also meet the following preferred qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent training, education, and experience.
- Experience using SketchUp, Revit, CAD or similar programs
- Ability to work weekends, holidays and evenings
- Interest in contemporary art and/or experience working with Contemporary artists
- Demonstrated experience with carpentry, construction, and welding techniques
- Demonstrated experience with audio/visual installation
- Experience with rigging techniques and processes

Required Licenses/ Certifications Anticipated Hiring Range $48,000-$51,000 Application Process/Additional Information
