Position Primary Purpose and General Responsibilities

Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine ( SOM ) is seeking a collaborative and experienced HR professional to fill the role of HR Business Partner ( HRBP ). The HRBP will be responsible for providing operational execution and oversight of human resources services to a variety of departments within the School of Medicine. This position will oversee the HR functions of a variety of departments for both the Health System and University. The position will also collaborate with the SOM HR team on strategic plans and initiatives to support the School of Medicine. The HR Business Partner reports to the Assistant Dean for Administration and serves as an advisor for employees, managers and school leadership. Additional duties and responsibilities include:
•Provide technical and consultative HR guidance for assigned service areas.
•Provide advice and guidance on complex and confidential matters including; performance management; and employee relations issues.
•Make recommendations on, initiate, and finalize HR actions around position management (revisions and establishments), staff compensation and employment (postings, hiring proposals, new hire onboarding), and faculty support (recruitment administration, onboarding, promotion & transfer coordination).
•Facilitate training sessions to support the needs of assigned service areas.
•In collaboration with the SOM HR team, provide guidance on HR issues and participate in the decision-making and implementation of HR policies, procedures, programs and functions.
•Serve as HR liaison between assigned service areas and SOM HR, VCU Health and VCU HR.
•Participate in the HR community by attending HR Professional Committee meetings, career community events and VCU HR training for HR Professionals.
•Participate in special projects as identified in support of the School of Medicine, and VCU’s new Great Place policy and service delivery model.
•Provide back-up support for the SOM HR team.

Minimum Hiring Standards

•Bachelor’s degree from accredited college or university in business administration, management, public administration, human resources or related field; or equivalent combination of education and experience in lieu of educational requirements.
•Experience working in a HR position advising, guiding and consulting with managers and employees.
•Ability to develop relationships and build partnerships with internal teams and stakeholders in a diverse organization and across all levels.
•Technical HR expertise related to employment and recruiting, compensation, performance management, employee relations, etc.
•Ability to influence, guide, direct and consult with HR professionals and leadership.
•Ability to translate changing business objectives to effective HR strategies.
•Demonstrated ability to interpret, explain and apply HR policies, state and federal regulations and protocols.
•Ability to present to large and small groups.
•Outstanding customer service skills and high degree of professionalism.
•Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing with all individuals within a diverse community.
•Resourcefulness with the ability to adapt to change and ambiguity.
•Ability to exercise strong attention to detail in a fast-paced environment and to set/meet deadlines, organize workload and juggle changing priorities.
•Demonstrated ability to handle confidential and sensitive information appropriately and with discretion.
•Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and HR Information systems.
• Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment, or commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU .

Preferred Hiring Standards

•HR experience in a higher education environment.
•Knowledge of VCU employee groups, including all subsets of faculty and staff.
•Experience working with VCU’s HRIS suite including Banner, Image Now, Real Time, eJobs, etc.
•SHRM Human Resources certification or equivalent (or progress toward)
