Position Primary Purpose and General Responsibilities

Incumbent will take care of laboratory animals in order to help research work within rodent barrier. Provide research support, health care and husbandry for laboratory animals maintained within rodent barrier. Clean; change cages and bottles; feed/water animals; observe/report sick/dead/injured animals; sweep, mop, house and squeegee rooms. Sanitize and buff room.Ensure cage cards are filled out properly. Take tri-weekly census of animal population and fill out prescribed forms. Maintains cleanliness of animal and support rooms, cages, water bottles and all equipment used for animals within his/her jurisdiction on a regular basis set forth by the Supervisor. Monitors animals under his/her jurisdiction daily for early signs of disease or injury including such signs as rough hair coat, unusual activity or behavior, unusual feeding or elimination and removes all dead animals from cages daily, documents as indicated by standard operating procedure and informs the supervisor. Receives incoming laboratory animals, appropriately cage them, as specified in written protocols, records on cage cards data as required by standard operating procedures and AAALAC standards. Ensures that the cage wash area is maintained in an organized and sanitary fashion. Assures that the inventory of clean cages and related equipment such as water bottles, wirebar lids and filter tops are available for use by animal caretaker staff and research staff at all times. Assures that at the end of the day all dirty cages are dumped and run through the cage washer and stacked in the appropriate clean cage storage area. Ensures that related equipment such as carts will be cleaned and disinfected prior to the end of the day so that they are available the following day for animal care staff and research staff. Provides the supervisor an update on the status of caging and equipment inventory in a timely fashion to assure that caging needs are consistently met and caging equipment shortages do not occur.Take out garbage. Do laundry to maintain personal hygiene.

Minimum Hiring Standards

Applicants need to have the ability to make independent decisions; ability to use proper techniques to safely perform standard clinical procedures; and the ability to use computer keyboard-knowledge of Microsoft Office (Excel and Word). Knowledge and understanding of animal health and husbandry, behavior, disease control, sanitation processes, aseptic techniques and environmental changes that affect laboratory animals is highly preferred. High school diploma or equivalent, completion of training equivalent to the Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician certification of the AALAS, and previous experience animal care experience; or high school diploma or equivalent and significant animal care experience in the care of an animal species appropriate to the particular job; or an equivalent combination of education and experience; and knowledge and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position; must understand and follow safety standards of the USDA and Environmental Health and Safety; must perform tasks that require the use of personnel protective equipment such as safety glasses, safety shoes, protective clothing and gloves, or work using fume hoods or glove boxes; must be comfortable with the use of animals in biomedical research; good verbal and written communication skills including ability to read and write English and maintain legible records; pre-employment health screen and annual follow-up; participation in department’s occupational health program; ability to bend, squat, kneel, stand, reach above shoulder level, and move on hard surfaces for up to 7 hours a day; ability to safely move and or lift 40 pounds; be respectful and professional with others and adhere to VCU Campus Code of Conduct at all times.
