Overview

Saint Mary's College seeks to hire a per-course adjunct faculty member to teach the Core course KINES 370: Psychological Analysis of Sport and Exercise (3 credit course) in the Graduate Kinesiology Program in Summer 2021. Dates: June 7 - July 22, 2021 (Mondays & Wednesdays, 6:00-8:45pm).

The Master of Arts in Kinesiology program at Saint Mary's College focuses on the study of human beings engaged in physical activity. It is designed to ensure that graduate students are exposed to the breadth and depth of classical and contemporary knowledge in the component areas of the field while taking advantage of the finest things about Saint Mary's College (e.g., an interest in the student as a person and an emphasis on shared inquiry and critical thinking). Students select a concentration that fits best with their personal and professional goals: Sport Studies, Sport Management, or Fitness Management, and typically complete the program in 14 to 26 months.

Responsibilities

KINES 370: Psychological Analysis of Sport and Exercise will focus on in-depth analysis of the foundations of psychology as they pertain to the sport and physical activity domain. Students will discuss the utility of current theories in social, cognitive, and developmental psychology as they relate to sport and exercise. Much of this course will be devoted to a) understanding the importance of theory and empirical research in sport psychology, and b) using the theory andresearch as a basis to inform best practices in the physical domain as well as other areas of life.

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to: Understand psychological theories and empirical research and apply them appropriately in sport/exercise settings and beyond; Identify proper and improper techniques for motivation; Differentiate between effective and maladaptive leadership styles in sport; Utilize various psychological techniques to enhance performance; Differentiate between effective and ineffective methods of building group cohesion; Design a theoretically based psychological skills training program for athletes that enhances motivation, confidence, one's ability to cope with pressure, and the enjoyment of the activity; Demonstrate familiarity with practices that enhance the probability of adherence to exercise; Apply what was learned in class to their personal sport/exercise experiences; Integrate theory and research with practical strategies for effective psychological interventions with struggling athletes; Demonstrate improved communication skills (both verbal and written); Arrange materials for a resource file that can be used for lifelong learning on these topics.

NOTE: Psychological Analysis of Sport and Exercise is one of the five Core courses in the Graduate Kinesiology Program. Upon completion of the required coursework for the program, students complete a one-hour comprehensive exam on the subject material from this class. The instructor hired for this class agrees to write an appropriate exam question for this class, help prepare students to complete the exam, grade it, and work with students who may need to retake the exam. Students complete their comprehensive exams at the conclusion of their course of study, which may not be the same semester in which the course is taken (e.g., students have five years to complete their degree). The instructor hired to teach this course should be prepared to work with Graduate Kinesiology leadership and students at the point at which students take their exams. Additional compensation is provided in-line with these expectations.


Qualifications:
The successful candidate will hold a terminal degree in Kinesiology or a closely related field and have a recent publication record in the field, or a Master’s degree in Kinesiology or a closely related field and have at least five years of current, relevant professional experience. Demonstrated teaching effectiveness at the graduate level as evidenced by recent course evaluations is strongly preferred as is familiarity with course delivery through Zoom. Candidates should be comfortable supporting and working in a multicultural environment.

Course Modality: 100% Online or Flex where the faculty member teaches on-campus and students attend either in-person or online. In the flex model, faculty manage their own technology during class and support is provided through campus resources. The flex option is subject to Covid-related restrictions. Regardless of modality, classes meet synchronistically on Mondays and Wednesdays, with at least 75% of overall class time being delivered synchronistically. Applicants must reside in California.
