Job Description:
Apply student development philosophy and theory to provide comprehensive counseling services to community college students from diverse backgrounds, with a primary focus on African American/Black students. Programs and services include transfer, degree, and career & technical education program planning, career decisions, goal clarification, and personal life management.

Counsel students regarding choice of transfer institutions and necessary requirements for programs at other colleges and universities.

Teach counseling courses and related courses to a diverse student population with a primary focus on African American/Black students and programs.

Conduct orientation for new students.

Maintain positive and professional relationships with faculty in instructional division(s) as assigned.

Manage electronic student educational plans, course placements, access to student information systems and access the internet for academic and career planning.

Participate in curriculum development and serve on department, division, college and district committees as necessary to maintain and improve the instructional program; participate in appropriate professional development activities.

Participate in co-curricular activities, including planning, implementing, and teaching in special programs designed to support student success.

Participate in the formulation of Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs) and the Student Learning Outcomes assessment cycle.

Maintain formal office and campus hours; participate in department and division meetings.

Maintain current knowledge of instructional methods and new technologies pertinent to areas of assignment; learn and apply emerging technologies and advances (e.g., computer software applications) as necessary to perform duties in an efficient, organized and timely manner.

Teach scheduled classes and perform related duties as assigned, including timely compliance with clerical and administrative responsibilities; comply with district, college and division policies in the performance of duties.

Instruct and assist in the growth and success of a diverse population of students through careful preparation of course materials, effective teaching methodologies and informed critical feedback on assignments and discussions.

Develop culturally relevant course content, culturally responsive pedagogical techniques, and effective practices for engaging students who are diverse and/or are students who are historically underserved. The ideal candidate should have experience in this area with African American, Latinx, Native Americans, Pacific Islanders and other disproportionately impacted students.

Work cooperatively with staff and students.

Evening and/or Saturday assignments may be required as part of the regular contract.


Primary Purpose:
Duties and responsibilities as presented are intended to be representative and not restrictive. The District reserves the right to modify the assignment and allocation of duties in accordance with operational needs.

This position reports to the Dean of Counseling and Student Development at Cypress College.

Minimum Qualifications:
Master’s in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work, career development, marriage and family therapy or marriage, family and child counseling,

OR the equivalent. Equivalent qualifications may include related education, training, employment and professional experience that would be equal to the required degree(s) and experience in this field as determined by the District Equivalency Committee.

(NOTE: A bachelor’s degree in one of the listed degrees and a license as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) is an alternative qualification for this discipline.)


Desirable Qualifications:
Demonstrated experience with learning communities and their development.

Experience working with students who are under-represented in higher education and has demonstrated sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, faculty, and staff.

Demonstrated experience with outreach and recruiting; ability to work effectively with local community, students and staff.

Experience teaching in higher education.


Working Conditions:


Salary Range: $74,660 - $113,035 Annually

Initial salary placement will be determined by the Office of Human Resources in accordance with the faculty collective bargaining agreement and is not negotiable.
