Hampshire College invites applications for the position of vice president for finance and administration and treasurer.  Among the most innovative liberal arts colleges in the country, Hampshire College was born of the vision of educators who dreamed of a new paradigm for liberal arts education. The founding documents advocated many of the features realized in the Hampshire curriculum: an emphasis on each student’s interest and motivation; broad, multidisciplinary learning; and close mentoring relationships between faculty and students.  Hampshire opened its doors to its first class of students in 1970, and celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2020. The College is at a particularly exciting time in its evolution, as we have developed a new model for educating students that will transform our curriculum and the student experience. We seek a confident, hands-on, and innovative leader to work with all college constituents to realize the goals that will move the College toward a thriving and sustainable future.

Reporting to the President, the vice president for finance and administration (VPFA) and treasurer provides vision, leadership, strategic direction, and stewardship for all aspects of the College’s financial and administrative resources while ensuring absolute institutional integrity on fiscal and human resources matters.  The VPFA serves as a strategic advisor to the President, board of trustees, and other senior leaders in recommending financial and administrative objectives, policies, programs and practices that ensure a sound financial structure for the College. The VPFA works collaboratively to plan operating and capital budgets and develop a long-term sustainable economic and business model that ensures the viability of the College.  The VPFA sits on the President’s Leadership team and serves as the College’s CFO to oversee and provide leadership in all aspects of budget, business and financial services, finance and administrative systems, facilities services and campus planning, dining services, auxiliary services, human resources, information technology, environmental health and safety, compliance and risk management, financial reporting, governmental reporting, and banking and debt management, with management of staff  in these areas.  As treasurer, the VPFA will oversee the management of the College’s investments in line with its investment policies and direction provided by the business operations committee of the board of trustees.

Hampshire College seeks a collaborative leader and experienced manager with the skills and talent needed to develop and execute plans to enhance the fiscal sustainability of the College and its operations, and to manage change within a diverse and dynamic environment.  The VPFA will be passionate about Hampshire’s mission, approach, and core values of educational experimentation, social justice, and sustainability.   The VPFA will be an innovator willing to take informed risks that are aligned with the College’s mission, comfortable with ambiguity, responsive to the ideas of others, and a visible and accessible presence within the campus community. Hampshire College is committed to becoming an anti-racist institution: the successful candidate must be passionate about working in an organization that values and promotes diversity, equity, inclusion and anti-racism, demonstrate an understanding of the concepts of institutional and structural racism and their impact on underserved and underrepresented communities, and employ anti-racist practices and principles to accomplish work.   The preferred candidate will have held progressively responsible financial and administrative leadership roles in a complex environment, preferably within higher education or other mission-driven organization; demonstrated ability to develop budget policy and align programmatic priorities with current and future financial resources; a proven record of using modeling and statistical methods for financial planning, analysis and forecasting; understanding and sensitivity to managing relationships with lenders and oversite agencies; an understanding of financial instruments; a reasonable level of sophistication about investments and experience with capital markets; a broad understanding of the management of real estate, land use, human resources, information technology, dining services, and auxiliary services; excellent strategic thinking skills and strong communication skills; and appreciation for the out-of-the-box thinking, spirited inquiry, and innovation that are part of the Hampshire experience.  A bachelors degree with a minimum of three years of job-related experience is required. This position requires occasional travel.   Hampshire College is an equal opportunity employer and deeply committed to a community of excellence, equity, diversity, and inclusion. We’re particularly committed to revealing and combating the social and institutional structures that support racism and white supremacy in all phases of employment and college life. We believe that the educational and employment environment is enhanced when diverse groups of people with diverse ideas come together to work and grow. We encourage applications from women, underrepresented minorities, persons with disabilities, sexual minority groups, veterans, and other candidates who will contribute to the diversification and enrichment of ideas and perspectives. Hampshire College is committed to removing barriers to employment faced by equity-seeking groups and encourages (but does not require) members of these groups to self-identify in their application materials. Applicants whose work incorporates a global perspective and a demonstrated commitment to issues of diversity in the work environment are particularly encouraged to apply.

The salary range for this position is $150,000 - $175,000. Hampshire College offers an excellent benefits program for eligible employees such as medical, dental, vision, life insurance, generous retirement plan contributions, flexible leave plans, and many other fringe benefits.
