ABOUT POMONA COLLEGE: Located near Los Angeles, California, Pomona College is widely regarded as one of the nation's premier liberal arts colleges. POSITION SUMMARY: Reporting to the Vice President & Dean of the College, The Director, Prehealth Advising is a key leader in Pomona’s prehealth community. The Director, Prehealth Advising supports students in their exploration of health careers, provides related academic advising, and guides students through the application process for graduate and professional programs. The person in this position will conduct workshops and individual/group meetings to assist current students and alumni in preparation for entrance to various healthcare profession programs. Those workshops/meetings provide information such as prerequisites for programs, the application process, and financial aid. Also provides candidates with feedback on essays, choice of schools, timing of application, preparing for and taking of appropriate entrance exams, and interviewing skills. The Director, Prehealth Advising will develop and maintain relationships with admission officers at professional and graduate schools to increase the visibility of Pomona College and its students. They will gather up-to-date information on program admission requirements by attending professional meetings, reading websites and listservs, and visiting health professions schools. This person will represent Pomona College at national and regional conferences, as well as campus meetings when their expertise in prehealth advising is necessary. The Director, Prehealth Advising serves as a member of the faculty committee on Health Sciences and prepares drafts of the Health Science Committee letters of recommendation. This position organizes the faculty Health Sciences Committee and keep the committee apprised of changes in requirements and admission procedures. This position also drafts the Health Science Committee letter and works with the committee to assign level of recommendation. Other responsibilities include: Provides clear direction and oversight of all department activities in order to develop and achieve annual goals, including budgeting, planning and staff development. Also responsible for monitoring and evaluating direct reports and overall department staff performance and daily assignments. Including supervising an administrative assistant to ensure letters of recommendation are sent to health professions schools in a timely manner, events are organized and manage well, and communication with students, alums and the larger college community is effective. This position also organizes and revises the Prehealth website and maintain social media communication. QUALIFICATIONS:- Education: Master’s Degree required; doctorate is preferred.
- Licenses/Certificates: A valid driver’s license or equivalent means of reliable transportation to off-site meetings and events is required.
- Experience: A minimum of six years of advising experience is required. Ability to handle all activities and highly confidential information with patience, discretion, good judgment, courtesy and tact while working with people from a wide variety of backgrounds. Must maintain an efficient, collegial, proactive, and inclusive work environment within the office and with collaborating departments. Demonstrates effective, accurate, and clear communication with excellent verbal, written, interpersonal, reading, and leadership skills to supervise, facilitate, motivate, and inspire a highly diverse group of employees, student employees, and temporary workers. Must also assist and communicate well with parents, students, alumni, volunteers, community partners, and other possible stakeholders.
