Assistant Professor of Asian American Studies, Augsburg University
Augsburg University invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Asian American Studies to begin August 24, 2021, as part of the cluster hires for the newly established Critical Race and Ethnicity Studies (CRES) Department. We welcome applicants with broad teaching and scholarly expertise in Asian American experiences, which includes formal, interdisciplinary training in Asian American Studies. This new department emerges out of the collective passions and strengths of our students, staff, and faculty as well as Augsburg University’s commitment to anti-racism and social justice. The successful candidate in Asian American Studies, along with other new hires with expertise in Latine/x Studies and Black Studies, will have substantial input into the department’s design, development, and direction. Candidates are expected to demonstrate evidence of or strong potential for excellence in teaching, scholarship/creative pursuits, service, and commitment to mentoring students. A commitment to collaborative, intersectional, and interdisciplinary work is highly desirable.
The candidate will be expected to teach courses at the undergraduate level, including core foundational courses (e.g., Introduction to Critical Race and Ethnicity Studies) and courses within their area of specialization. May be asked to teach at the graduate level. The teaching load is six courses per year. The candidate may develop courses in conjunction with cognate departments with which they share demonstrable disciplinary competence, including but not limited to departments of English, Gender, Sexuality and Women’s Studies, Education, History, and Sociology. Candidates who specialize in the Southeast Asian American experience are especially encouraged to apply. Ph.D. in any related specialization, discipline, and field is required by the start of appointment.
Among the distinctive features of the university are its deep dedication to civic and community engagement, robust undergraduate research programs, and a strong belief in the integration of liberal arts and professional studies across all programs. The University’s commitments to our urban context and the world beyond it are enhanced through the work of four signature centers: the Christensen Center for Vocation, the Center for Global Education and Experience, the Sabo Center for Democracy and Citizenship, and the Strommen Center for Meaningful Work. All faculty members are encouraged to develop significant, experiential learning opportunities in collaboration with one or more of these centers through curricular and co-curricular programming in our main campus in Minneapolis, as well as our satellite site in Rochester, MN, and academic centers in Central America and Southern Africa. Faculty members also design and offer Study-Away programs across all fifty states.
