The Department of Cell Biology and Physiology at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine welcomes applicants for a full time faculty position at the rank of Teaching Assistant Professor.  The department is dedicated to quality in research, graduate and postdoctoral training, and medical education.  Our researchers conduct cutting-edge, innovative research that advances the discipline of cell biology and physiology, with an emphasis on topics that contribute to the improvement of human health.  The UNC Department of Cell Biology and Physiology is internationally recognized for medical research.  The breadth of investigation is reflected in our interdisciplinary Cell Biology and Physiology Curriculum, which provides a broad, integrated biological foundation and emphasizes rigor, transparency, integrity, and creative scientific reasoning.  Our graduates are successful scientists in universities, pharmaceutical companies, and government.  

The Teaching Assistant Professor will be appointed with an emphasis on excellence in teaching.  The initial appointment for Teaching Assistant Professor is one year.  Appointments are renewable based on an assessment of annual goals and availability of funds.  

After a mentoring period, the successful candidate will assume responsibilities for: acting as a course instructor, mentoring and advising current Cell Biology and Physiology curriculum students, engaging in discussions of curriculum reform, curriculum review, student assessment, and developing innovative active learning approaches.  

Additional teaching opportunities and responsibilities in the Department of Cell Biology and Physiology, Medical School, School of Dentistry, and School of Nursing are likely.  The candidate may have the opportunity to participate in funded research in collaboration with research faculty.

Educational Requirements: Ph.D. or equivalent degree in Physiology or a closely related field.

Qualifications and Experience:

The successful candidate will have a track record of accomplishment in teaching at the undergraduate or professional school level.  Successful candidates will also have skills in classroom teaching, development of modern teaching materials, and working effectively with colleagues in team-taught courses, specifically within one or more of the following subjects: physiology, psychiatric, and neurological disorders.  

Additional desirable qualifications and experience include: previous effective teaching experience (as evidenced by student course evaluations and/or from references), participation in course development, course assessments, program reviews, student advising and mentoring, strong communication skills, demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with colleagues, and the ability to teach advanced level courses in Physiology.
