The Johns Hopkins University invites nominations and applications for the position of Director of the Center for Biotechnology Education within the Krieger School of Arts & Sciences’ Advanced Academic Programs Division. The Advanced Academic Programs (AAP) is a division of the Krieger School of Arts and Sciences at the Johns Hopkins University (JHU).  As the nation’s oldest and one of the most prestigious research universities, Johns Hopkins offers high-quality master’s degrees and post-baccalaureate education to students in the Mid-Atlantic region and online.  In addition to its online programs, AAP also offers master’s degrees and graduate certificate programs at its Washington, DC Center and at the Homewood campus in Baltimore, MD.  AAP enrolls almost 5,000 students each academic year. 

 

Reporting jointly to the Krieger School’s Associate Dean for Graduate and Professional Programs and the Program Chair for Biotechnology, the Center Director will sustain the excellence of the Center’s programs, will foster and lead ongoing innovation in programs and curriculum, and will pursue efficiency and excellence in support services so as to ensure that the Center continues to fulfill its important role in the Krieger School. The Center’s extensive outreach activities serve as a pipeline of students, faculty, and professionals in the fields of biotechnology, bioinformatics, regulatory science, and biotechnology enterprise and entrepreneurship to its programs. 

 

In both academic and administrative capacities, the Center Director oversees the curriculum, students, faculty, and staff for a portfolio that currently comprises eight master’s degrees and three certificate programs as well as the development and oversight of new initiatives, such as a new degree in Regenerative and Stem Cell Technologies. The Center Director is a full-time, non-tenure-track, 12-month renewable faculty position with the academic title of Lecturer or Senior Lecturer (appointment level commensurate with experience).  The Center Director also serves as the Program Director for one or more programs within the Center.

 

The Center Director must be entrepreneurial, energetic, collaborative, and inclusive. Candidates who have experience teaching and engaging students from diverse backgrounds are of particular interest.

 

To be considered, candidates should meet the following minimum and preferred qualifications:

 

  • Terminal degree in the biological sciences
  • Five-plus years of higher education teaching experience online and/or at the graduate level
  • Three or more years of experience at the Program Director level or experience managing a degree or certificate program
  • The ability to teach a wide variety of courses in the biotechnology and biological science fields
  • Demonstrated excellence in teaching and innovation in curriculum design
  • Three to five years of related professional work experience outside of academia within the biological sciences, including but not limited to consulting or collaborative work or research with organizations like FDA, NCI, NIH, HHS, Biotechnology Companies, Pharmaceutical Companies, or Professional Associations
  • Experience managing laboratory environments
