Position Description-Associate Director of Development for the Johns Hopkins Children's Center

The Associate Director is responsible for the identification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of major gifts and high-end annual gifts in support of the Johns Hopkins Children’s Center from friends, grateful patients/families, alumni, faculty, and foundations. The Associate Director will also oversee the Children’s Center’s Annual Fund Program and serve as the primary office liaison to volunteers planning and hosting third party events, as well as proactively identifying, developing, implementing and evaluating new opportunities to engage, steward, and recognize leadership volunteers and major donors.

Specific Responsibilities

The Associate Director will:

  1. Develop a comprehensive understanding of the research, teaching and clinical programs and priorities of the Johns Hopkins Children’s Center, in order to represent these needs both internally and externally.
  • Serve as a major gift fundraiser for the Johns Hopkins Children’s Center. Identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward major gifts primarily from unaffiliated individual donors, grateful patient families, corporations, foundations, and pediatric faculty and alumni.
  • Serve as the primary development associate for the Department of Pediatrics’ divisions of Hematology and Hospitalist Medicine, as well as the department’s Residency and Social Work programs.
  • Partner with faculty members to identify and create strategies for outreach, approach, solicitation, and stewardship of grateful patients in support of their research, division, and/or satellite clinic.
  • Manage a personal portfolio of prospects, engaging and moving them along the prospect readiness continuum as appropriate, whether via discovery, cultivation, solicitation or stewardship visits. This includes a goal of at least 100 substantive actions annually.
  • Manage the Annual Fund Program for the Johns Hopkins Children’s Center with a major focus on building the Major Gift and Estate Gift pipeline.
  • Serve as the primary liaison for all third-party events benefitting the Johns Hopkins Children’s Center, identifying strategies, goals, and metrics for success.
  • Participate in the planning of major development events, such as signature events (Radiothon, Annual Race, Annual Dance Marathon), and Chair or Professorship dedications, as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Qualifications

    The Associate Director must possess excellent verbal and written communication skills, and be able to use good judgment and juggle priorities in a fast-paced environment. S/he must be able to use discretion handling confidential information and be able to forge strong relationships with the Children’s Center’s grateful patients, faculty, volunteers and friends, and other members of the Development & Alumni Relations team.

      Bachelor’s degree required At least three years related development experience required, preferably at a professional level in a university and/or medical setting Excellent interpersonal and oral communication skills and the ability to work independently and as part of a team Strong organizational, analytical, and interpersonal skills Willingness to travel and to work occasional evening or weekend hours as needed

    The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
